DaimlerChrysler AG plans to start selling its micro two-seater Smart car in the United States in 2007, according to published reports. The Wall Street Journal reported that DaimlerChrysler plans to soon announce the launch of the two-door Smart car in the U.S., citing people familiar with the matter that it didn't name.
The fortwo model has been popular in Europe. Still, DaimlerChrysler's Smart unit has never turned a profit, and the company said earlier this month that the unit's sales of all models fell 21.5 percent on the year.
The model has already been launched in Canada, where the company has said initial sales have been good.
I don't know about this. These cars make the Aveo or the xA look big.

I think it is a terrible idea, what would happen in a car accident with a SMART car vs. a Hummer H2. The SMART car is way too small to be driven in the States. European drivers are a lot different (smarter) than American drivers. The Aveo and xA should be the smallest cars on the road, due to safety.
Although, this would be pretty cool to do:

Smart cars are suprisingly safe in accidents. The passengers are essentially sitting inside a big roll cage. Intrusion in accidents is very rare.
I would buy a smart if they are priced right. I have heard they are trying to bring them in at 12K. I think 12K for a commuter car is great, combine that with incredible fuel mileage, being able to park it anywhere and I'm sold.
Maybe I'm getting old, but I don't need 400hp to drive back and forth to work everyday. I will take my car out on the track where I can really enjoy it, and drive something like this around town. My belief is that as a car enthusiast I should do everything I can to keep cars as a viable form of transportation. I don't want to see huge taxes on higher horsepower cars, so I am willing to do my part ot make changes before the government forces me to. (OK enough of the soap box)
yes I think it's a smart move.

I think bringing the SMART cars here to America is an awsome idea. I always thought that an accident in one of these things would mean instant death but i saw crash testing on the ever so popular european show "Top Gear" and in a head on colision, the car interior cabin remained intact. BRING ON THE SMARTs

its a great idea, but they wont sell like they should. america is not willing to give up their right to own oversized, gas guzzling suvs. its unamerican! its sad but true.
