i own a 1982 chevrolet s10 5 speed standard. the starter has gone out, or atleast that's what i thought it was... i went to start the truck the other day and the starter spun but the engine didn't. i bough a new starter and it's dooing the same thing. i have tried to shim the starter and had no luck. any ideas what this could be? am i in need of a ring gear? does anyone by chance have the specs on the flywheel tooth size?

sounds like a flywheel problem to me, either ground down teeth, or missing teeth

did you replace the solenoid with the starter? the starter solenoid pushes the starter gear out to the ring gear. If it is new you will need to check and see if it is getting power.

i did replace the solenid with the starter. the starter throws the pinion gear out to meet with the ring gear, but some how they don't lign up. the starter is getting power but has .25v drop and it still seems like it would crank. would it still be voltage if it's spinning but not catching on the ring gear? now if it is ringear damage could it wear eavenly around the ring gear teeth or enough to not catch on the ringear? the guy at autozone said something about being a common problem. i don't really want to replace anymore parts if i can figure out exactly what the problem is first.

why isn't the pinion catching the ring gear? It either isn't mvoing far enough out, or the pinion is substantialy smaller then the factory one and you aren't getting gear mesh. i would compare the new starter asembly to the factory unit to see what is different. It is quite possible you have the wrong part. Also make sure it mounts the same. It could be offset in a way that is causing the broblem.

you shouldn't have to shim it. the starter is either the wrong one or the bendix is not engaging. you can pull off the inspection cover and see if the flywheel has any missing teeth, but I doubt it. fly wheels are pretty tough, if anything the starter you bought is the wrong one or it is not working correctly. Most starters are not new, but rebuilt. just because your starter is spinning is no indication that the bendix came out and is engaging the fly wheel, they will spin without coming out.
