I failed my state emmissions test today because the check engine light does not come on and then go off when the car is initially started. Does anyone have advice?

You have to find out what is causing the light to come on by hooking up a scan tool and reading the code in the computer. The code will likely lead you in the direction of the fault. That fault must be repaired or the light will continue to come on.

Ok you say that your light is not coming on , Right? If so the first thing you have to do is check the fuse for the check engine soon or (MIL) light.Number 12 in fuse box under dash. While you are down there, Check all the other fuses with a test light too. You need the key in the run position. But first do your other gauges? Tach, low fuel indicator, fuel gauge, Engine coolant temp gauge,Brake indicator, and oil pressure indicator.etc. If these are working then you most likely have other problem. Your next step is to remove the instrument cluster. And check for power at the bulb with the key on. Use only a volt meter. Also make sure you check the bulb. If these are ok You either have a wiring problem or a bad PCM. Don't have many Pcm's.
