I have seen similar problems on this but no answers.  Our jeep's engine (4.0 straight 6) shuts down while driving.  Usually happens about 10 to 15 minutes after starting out.  It will not immediately start back up, but if it sits for a couple minutes it turns over no problems. Until yesterday this has only happened once during any trips.  Yesterday it happened 3 times.  The transmission, fuel pump, water pump and crankshaft sensor are all new.
Any Ideas????

I think I might be able to help on this one.  But... I did this about 3 years and 120k ago, and plus I got frustrated by the process and finally had a shop figure this for me.
I have a 96 cherokee 4.0 auto, mine would drive fine, then just quit, no warning, no nothing, just quit.  After a few minutes it would restart. I  checked and/or replaced many things including most of what you list above.  Finally the shop I took it to, found it to be a sensor.  They tried the crankshaft sensor first, that was not it, so they tried another similar sensor (I want to say crankcase sensor, but that probably merely shows my lack of knowledge).  Anyway, when they replaced this sensor, I went from quitting multiple times every time I drove more than 15 minutes to no problems whatsoever for 3years and 120k.  I am sorry I cannot give you an exact name.  They did say they had never seen this sensor go bad before.

Thanks so much for your email.  We figured maybe it was the camshaft sensor, so we replaced that -- not the problem.  But when we replaced the crankshaft sensor the problem went away!  Seems there are many sensors in these vehicles.  Anyway, what a relief, I've got my jeep back!!!  Thanks for your response, it was the ONLY one we got!!!

I read what you said about the 94 Grand Cherokee Engine shutting down.  What sensor exactly did you replace to fix the shut down?

Look at the temperature sensor, this motor has a sensor to protect it from overheating

Please try to find out what sensor the shop replaced.  I'm having the same problem that had.  Engine shuts down for no reason then restarts soon after.

Thanks

most common is the crankshaft sensor   then followed by the camshaft sensor

crankshaft sensor is somewhat hard to replace it's just two bolts but in the back of the engine on the drivers side

the camshaft sensor remove two screws that hold on the dist.cap remove the rotor and the cam sensor just lifts out it's very easy to change

I've tried just about everything.  I replaced the Crankshaft Postion Sensor, the Idle Speed Automatic Air Control, Rotor, Distributor Cap and the Ignition Coil.  The car got worse and didn't want to start at all after staring for about three minutes.

I tried and tried to restart, but the car refused ealy in the AM.  I decided to disconnect the battery for a minute and the car started again.  I drove it one block and parked it and took another car.

Can any one help me diagnose this problem on the 96 Jeep grand Cherokee Laredo?

Thanks
