I own a 1990 Olds 98 Regency that has the DRIVER INFORMATION SYSTEM ACCESSORY.  Today was a hot day and when I parked it and before turning the engine off I checked the coolant temp by pushing the proper button on the DRIVER INFORMATION SYSTEM panel and it showed 226* F and went to 229 after shutting it off and the cooling fan did not come on.   The coolant warning light did not come on either. What temp should the cooling fan start running?

Most electric cooling fans don't come on until approx 220 degrees. Remember that most thermostats don't open until 180-190 degrees so if the fan came on at 190 it would run all of the time.

A properly maintained cooling system can go up to 240-250 degrees with out boiling over.

my car throws an overheating code at 220.  And my thermoatat opens at 180 degrees, it just goes to show that every car is different and I shouldnt have given you a specific answer.
