what kind of engine do I have here?

I bought a 1987 oldsmobile 98 a few months ago and everything was going great untill I strated getting a wierd noise from the engine, well as it turns out... the engine init does not belong there... I have pics of the engine, can anyone tell me what engine this is?

i have no idea, but somebody here should. How did you figure out it was the wrong engine?

Only engine that came in the 1987 98 is a 3.8L 6-cyl VIN Code 3

If you have a transplant I cannot tell.

how was it this engine ID'd as incorrect? it looks like a 3.8 ltr V6.
Have you gotten the engine block numbers and checked with a GM dealer or shop manual?
