I recently had my serpentine belt (and other belts)replaced on my 97 4Runner and today the belts came off their pulleys. I called the shop that replaced the belts. They came and got the 4Runner and then called to tell me it wasn't what they did, the harmonic balancer when out and it would be $650 to replace it. The exact same thing happened last time I had the belts replaced (different shop) so now I'm skepitcal. Is this coincedence? The place that has my truck now says this is pretty common for 4Runners. My questions are, did they do something wrong?; did the harmonic balancer go out causing the belts to come off, or did the belts come off, ruining the harmonic balancer.

So your timing belt was thrown off track. Is your engine ok? I did some research and couldn't find any other cases of your problem.
I really wish I could give you more input than that, sorry I cant.

I have seen balancers fail but twice on the same vehicle is strange, I have that kind of luck though so I know it is possible, I would check closely to see if the balancer was installed with the proper tool or pounded on with a hammer. It was very common in many shops years ago and unfortunately still happens in some, to install them with a big hammer.
