I weould like to know if a 1995 monte carlo 3.4 alternator will go on a 1996 grand am 3.1

If the alternators look the same it should work, if not the alternators for GM vehicles are very interchangeable for the most part so they are easy to find.

get the part numbers and compair. or, call the loacal parts counter and get there part number for each. altnators can look the same and have different outputs. I would not install a smaller rated alternator than the vehicle needs.

The only problem with part numbers on alternators is if they've been rebuilt and a stator of a different rating was installed, the output won't be the same as the original unit. What I was using as a guidline is that both are for v6 engines and both of the vehicle models mentioned are comparably equipped as far as electrical devices are concerned.
