I have an 81 corvette that I pulled the wires off the distributor without thinking. I've tried everything to get it to crank back up. I've found where I 'thought' the number 1 is on the distributor and replaced the wires accordingly 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 but still won't crank. I've started number 1 from just about everywhere. It is a GM 5.7LG engine and has "WEIARD 7548" stamped on the top. Could it be that the wire settings arent' right for this engine?

If the distributor is installed correctly the #1 position on the distributor cap is the one in the front but closer to the drivers side. If you remove the #1 spark plug and crank the engine over until the piston pushes air out of the cylinder you can find TDC and verify the distributor is installed properly.

you could try going off the vin number to identify the engine code
