first remove valve covers. then start car, listen for clattering. "tick tick tick" sound. while runnig at idle. adjust one at a time! slowly loosen the rocker arm till it "clatters", then tighten 1/4 turns till it quiets down. then, move on to next rocker arm. "DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN!!" adjust all the same, there are 16 of them to do. 2 per cylinder. this is a dangerous job because the engine is running so please take caution!!!

Something that can make this job a little cleaner is a set of rocker clips. They are clips that cover up the oiling hole in the rocker arm to prevent the spraying of oil. I would highly recomend a set if you are planning to adjust your rockers.

According to the Haynes manual for my 1976 Blazer w 350 it directs readers to postion the #1 piston to TDC (Compression stroke). And to adjust the #1 at that time intake and exhaust by loosening the pushrod by backing off the adjustment nut on the rocker arm. At that point it instructs you to slowly turn the pushrod until resistance is just felt and then tighten adjustment nut 3/4 turn to center the lifter. Also at that time there are others that can be adjusted (2,5 and 7 intakes and the 3,4 and 8 exhaust) and then a 360 degree turn of the motor and the opposite of those (3,4,6 and 8 intakes and 2,5,6, and 7 exhaust). All instructions are provided by Haynes North America, 861 Lawrence Drive, Newbury Park California 91320

This is what I found.  Hope this helps. Good luck

It sounds almost like adjusting lash on ah overhead cam. Same principle
