Some people disregard the classic mustang, and go to the Ford GT,and the new Mustang GT's...well I think that this is great. But dont forget your roots. It's a really grand history...from1967 Shelby GT500's to 1971 Mustang Mach1's...This is the last year for high performance mustangs, before the oil crisis in the 1970's.Back in 1971 the Mach1 came stock with the choice of a 429 Super Cobra Jet engine,a Drag Pack,4:11 gears, and much, much, more. This is probably better than most of the high performance cars we drive today. The reason being is that in 1973 people stopped making many performance cars that are worth your while. They did this because of the low gas milage of the muscle cars.(The engines were so big they would suck up most of the gas in minutes!)
The truth is the classics are much faster than the cars we drive today.

hmmmm..  Its true that a lot of classic cars are really cool, but to say that they are faster then cars today pretty ignorant.  Yeah, they can be made faster but in o.e.m form are not.  Car/computer technology has come a long way to improve efficiency

I drove an 04 Mustang Cobra the other day. That car was crazy fast!! Floor it in first, instant wheelspin, shift to second, let it hook and off you go.

While I agree that it is important to remember your roots, I have to agree with JTM that it is a little ignorant to say they are faster than today's cars. It has only been in recent years that a Mustang off the showroom floor hasn't struggled to break 6 seconds to 60. The 71 429 you are referring to does a mid 14 quarter with a skilled driver. Let's face it, The Mustang will have trouble beating a front wheel drive Nissan Maxima in a straight line, and I would put money on the maxima in both braking and handling. let's not even start talking about modern muscle cars like the Subis and mitsus.
I have driven a few Mach 1s, and a couple GT500s, they don't hold a candle to a modern sports car. The early 70s cars weighed in at around 4000 lbs, had realy vague steering, horrible brakes, and shake and rattle at anything over 30mph. Now if you factor in the 8 mpg you get, and the fact that modern cars have traveled light years in safety, there is no way you can say they were "better" cars. I like older cars too, but I have no illussions they are faster than even todays econo-rockets.

yeah i don't know about the statement made that classics are faster, i will say that many older cars have better styling (forien and domestic) and thats completely subjective, while speed is objective and the facts are while yes they can be made into very fast cars older cars sipmply can't compete with todays cars in many categories, you're talking about 30 to 80 year old technology when talking about classic cars
hell one of my favorite cars, the 68 charger is neither very fast or particuarly good looking but theres just something about the lines and the enormous monstrositry that it is, that i love i forgot what i was talking about but hopefully someone gets the point

We'll man I was the dude who wrote about classic Muscle cars...and I lost my *** password.Im really sorry if what I said was misunderstood, but when I said the Classic cars were faster than todays cars, I meant you could trick them out just as fast as todays race cars.Hell i've seen a '70 Hemi Cuda(trick of course)do a wheelie from the start line to the finish.I like modern muscle as well, but i'd still much rather have my 1971 Mach1 than any car in the world(It was my dream car...).(By the way could I fit a Ford 460cid in my Mach1?).
