"A Very Good Year: BMW Hits Sales Target Early, Rolls-Royce Struggles

MUNICH, Germany — BMW said its retail target of 1.4 million vehicles, originally expected to be hit in 2008, will be reached a year ahead of schedule.
Helmut Panke, chairman of the board of management of BMW, revealed the sales numbers at the company's annual meeting on Tuesday here and declared that the automaker intends "to deliver a total of about 1.6 million BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce vehicles by 2010."
Panke reported sluggish sales of the Rolls-Royce Phantom, noting that the company delivered only 107 Phantoms in the first quarter of 2006; that's 15.1 percent fewer than in the same quarter last year, when it sold 126 units.
Deliveries of the Mini fell to 49,519 in the first quarter because of "capacity expansion measures" at the brand's Oxford plant. But Panke said the expansion will result in a future product output of about 240,000 Minis a year."
