It's time to replace my airfilter in my Toyota Tacoma, and thinking I would go with a K&N for better air flow I found a secondary airfilter right after the primary (normal stock airfilter).
Has anyone seen this with Toyota's? What is its purpose? Can it be removed without damaging the engine. Seems this would restrict air flow even greater. Thoughts?

It's rectangle in shape with what looks like a screen material (similar to the filter found in a homes furnace). It sits right behind the paper air filter (maybe an inch gap between them). The MAF sensor is about 12-15 inches further down the intake. I have never seen anything like this, so any information would be great.

ive searched and searched, came up with nothing, my better guess would be to say that its not an air filter since all the K&N air filter replacements only come with one filter.

Thanks. I agree with you, seems to be a screen (since it can not be removed, cleaned, replaced). Just seems to me it restricts air flow, but who am I. Again, thanks for your feedback.

FYI.... Here is what my research has found. The 2nd filter you see is an emissions hydrocarbon filter. It must remain in the vehicle to maintain smog compliance.
