The Japanese Three--Toyota, Nissan, and Honda--are unleashing subcompacts in the U.S. market over the next couple of years. If you were in the market for one, which of the four would you purchase. (I added Aveo since it's in that segment):

Toyota Yaris

Nissan Versa

Honda Fit

Chevrolet Aveo

well since there is only one car company that took the time to give its sub compact car a value proposition.  I would have to say the Honda fit since its the only one with a unique quality that sets itself apart from the rest (sorry for the term and definition repetitiveness)

I would also get the Fit because of its best performance of the four and because of its sporty looks.

Another vote on the Honda Fit! It has the sportiest look out of all and the interior is smart and simple.

It's arguable that Honda or Toyota could win in the quality department.  I heard the Fit has a slick manual, which is most definately a plus...and it has the nice "paddle shifting" gimmick.  But I'd go for the Yaris, the liftback mind you not the dumpy sedan.  While the front end could be much better designed I love the look of the tail.  I love the fact that this car is smaller, in some dimensions, than a MINI, could you imagine the cornering possibilities!!!  Granted, it is a bit foolish to be talking performance with this entry-level auto but if you were dedicated to its performance numbers, you could use the TRD performance parts and possibly create a credible and very potent little rocket.  There is merit to this claim as the Yaris is incredibly popular in other locales, especially for those wanting an inexpensive and fast little car.

After reading reviews, doing research, seeing in person all the cars and driving (only the Versa and the Fit), I think the Versa wins hands down with looks, value, quality and comfort for the price. I did not like the hatchback coupe Toyota Yaris (having 4 passenger doors is a requirement for me). I did not like the apalling resale value of the Chevy Aveo (when compared to the competition). The Versa and the Fit are both nice drives but the Versa is alot more spacious and has better (more "luxurious") interior, dollar for dollar. The only thing that I wish the Versa had (that the Fit did) are the ultra versatile "origami" seat-cargo configurations (such as the flat folding seats).

I think another worthy contender in this segment is the Scion xD which is more compatible as the "Toyota" contender (when comparing to other 5-door hatchbacks). If they only allowed haggling for the price, I would have highly considered this car as well.

To make things short, I am a very happy Nissan Versa SL owner.
