Ed, I am having the same problem... prehaps you can shead some help on this situation. I bought this 2003 altima 2.5s. The vehicle ran well for the first two days after i left the dealer and then suddenly, the engine light came on and the engine started making this harsh sound only when you accelerate ( similar to a bad muffler). It has not shown any signs of oil burning. I don't what to do in terms of repairing it. I love the vehicle and hate to part with it. Do you think it could possibly be the catalytic converter? By the way, what is a resonator?

Thanks.

My story is pretty much the same as most I have read here. I bought my altima because I was under the impression that nissans were a good, reliable brand of car.... plus I liked the way it looked.

My first problems came the day I drove it off the lot. My headlight wasn't working... I replaced the bulb, but it still has never worked.

So then somewhere around 70,000 miles I noticed a new noise... almost sounded as if something was wrong with my exhaust. When I brought it in for an oil change at my regular mechanic, he didn't find a problem but noted that my car seemed to be burning oil.

Well then around 80,000 miles the sound got a little louder... almost sounded like a rattling in my dashboard. Then the check engine light came on so I brought it in to be serviced - I assumed the light just came on because it was around the time I was due for an oil change. After the oil change the sound wasn't as bad... that is until I hit 82,000. The noise was so loud when I started up my car that it probably woke up my neighbors.... and whenever I would accelerate - especially around 20-30 miles per hour the noise was constant. Finally, it decided to just shut down on me as I was driving. All the lights came on the dashboard and it just stopped running. It wouldn't start back up, but after a few minutes it eventually did. I had it towed away to the dealership immediately.

Anyway, I bought my car used from a Honda dealership and bought an extended warranty - I am covered up to 91,000 miles. However they don't want to deal with the problem and have sent it off to Nissan - nissan diagnosed that I need a new engine, but this wasnt enough for Honda so they have since sent it off to another nissan dealership. Fact is, honda doesnt want to have to pay... and ultimately I am sure nissan doesn't want to either. Meanwhile, the first dealership also fixed two recalls on the car - shouldn't Honda North have fixed them before they sold me a "certified pre-owned vehicle"?! One of the recalls was the headlight, the other had to do with the air bags not working, and to think had I been in a severe accident because my engine just shut off in the middle of the highway what could have happened.....

I am contacting my attorney this evening and plan to pursue any other means of having this problem solved... I am not going to pay for this problem when clearly it is not something that I caused.

If anyone has an info to help me please contact me at nickycams1@aol.com

Wow, am I glad I found this thread.

Over the past year I have been having problem after problem with my 2002 Nissan Altima.  The car has about 70K miles on it and it is driven fairly infrequently as I recently began working out of my home.

It started with a few check engine lights here and there.  Then, it was the CC.  Changed out (about $800) and just 2 weeks later the check engine light was back on.  Mechanic reset and changed oil.  Ever since I have been having the same noise and oil issues.  I just checked tonight after the noise return and there was little to no oil again!

I haven't checked out the fight nissan site but I am on my way over after reading this entire thread.

Me again...

Just stopped by my local mechanics.  They are going to look at it on Wed morning.

I told them to check the resonator, referring to the post earlier in this thread.  To me it kind of makes sense, resonator clogged, not letting exhaust through cleanly, creating all sorts of backpressure, making the engine work extra hard, burn more oil.  Make sense to anyone else?

Mechanic sort of smirked and said, eh, maybe.  He is going to check it out and I will hopefully remember to post back after that!!

I was successful in getting an engine replacement from Nissan for my 2002 Nissan Altima.  I picked my car up from the Nissan dealership on the 23rd of December 2006 and it is now August 2007 and the engine needs to be replaced again.  When the car was towed to them recently, I was told that they stand behind their 12 months or 12,000 mile warranty.  They also told me they felt there was a problem with the head gasket or the need for a new engine but they could not be sure until they tore the motor down and that would cost me $500.00.  I am so frustrated about this problem I don't know what to do.  I feel like going public with these lemons will solve a lot of problems.  My plan is to do this ASAP!  Maybe if the general public knows what's going on, they will do the right thing.  Who knows, it's worth a try.

I'm very surprised to hear all the negative reviews about Nissan.  I really believed that they offered great cars, well, NOT!!  I too am having the same problems.  I have 2002 Nissan that has overall been a pretty good car.  However, a couple months ago my car would not start.  I took the car to Precision Tune and was told there was a recall on my car for the ignition starter.  Well, I contacted Nissan and was told that they only fix recalls once.  Well, the problem obviously was not fixed.  So they refuse to fix my car.  The only thing that they have fixed for free was the front bulb light.  Now, my car does not work at all. I've been told that it blew a head gasket.  I've have the engine light on for years and I've taken it to several dealerships, advance auto parts, my personal mechanic, and no one can figure out why the light will not go off.  Well thing I was told  was if the gas knob is not replaced tight enough, the light will come on. Well, that's not my issue.  Now the car smokes, will not run, and I've been told it will cost almost $3000 to fix.  If anyone has heard anything from Nissan about this problem, pleas let me know.  I'm beginning to think that I really need to hire an attorney to settle this problem.  This is not a customer issue, but Nissan's problem since so many people have complained about it.

Thanks,

I work with an attorney and I'm about to go upstairs to speak with him about what our options are and how we can hopefully file a class action suit.  If you are on board, please email me at kbong@tnbar.org.  Give me some information that I can forward to my attorney.

thanks

I'm having the same problem as many of you. I bought my 2002 nissan Altima in November 2001. I started having problems in 2003 and every year since then. Some of my problems were covered by recall. I have had my catalytic converter replaced( or so I was told, A cam position sensor replaced and most recently throttle body replaced. My car has always had a high oil consumption. Recently I was told after spending almost $1000.00 for different parts to the same problem, (car cutting off while driving, hesitationin engine increased oil consumption and car smoking like crazy) I need to replace the engine. The car is now parked in front of my door because it is at a minimal functional level.I have written to Nissan  and is waiting for a reply as to how they are going to handle this problem.

I am glad i am not the only one that is having the same problem...i have replaced my cat converter, oxygen sensors, and just today the alternator and serpentine belt had to be replaced....but one of my mechanics to me to try a sludge remover.  He stated that when he changes my oil it tends to be black and sludgy...So i have done that twice with my last 2 oil changes and i have notice a big difference in the way the car runs and it is using less oil...I am not sure how long this will fix the problem or if it is something that i am going to have to do everytime i get my oil changed until i can afford to buy another HONDA...
