The head gasket on my 2002 Altima was replaced in 2005. The dealership mechanic claimed "I didn't put enough coolant in the radiator". This was funny since topping off fluids is part of the basic checks I get when I had them change my oil every 3000 miles. In 2008 I had to have my pre catalytic converter replaced, two mechanics from the same shop gave me to different reasons for what happened, and when they got their BS stories together they basically blamed me. In the winter heat is not very hot unless I'm driving and during the summer months their is always warm air blowing no matter how far to the left the temp control knob is. The floor boards are also rusting out!!!!!!!!!!! lnne68501@yahoo.com

The cat converter goes bad because oil leaks into the pistons in small amounts. The oil burns and exhausted through the cat converter fouling it and the O2 sensors.

Man.. after reading this post i had to reply. I too have a 2002 Altima. The headlight was first. They wanted me to pay almost 300 bucks for that but finally it was recalled. Now i am burning oil, and the coolant is being comsumed like crazy. I just had nissian put it on the machine to only hear that it now needs a new engine. this is crazy! I does have over 150,000 miles but i thought tha Nissans cars where suppose to be pretty good. I will not be buying another Nissan. I am done. The car will just have to be traded in on something else but not at a Nissan lot. And these cars do seem to be lemons. This is a legal issue.

Add me to it too. I have had enough. You put all your Money into these cars and its out of control. The engine should not have to be replaced. And it burns oil constantly. THere are too many other people having these problems as well. Something is wrong! larissrag@hotmail.com

Unbelievable...Sorry to see I am not alone... My problems started the day after I bought my '02 Altima 2.5, had to bring it back to have sun roof fixed- only to have it returned with a leaking roof! Let's see... then it was the head lights, a/c & heater, gas tank, steering column, countless recalls, and now I have ROTTEN FLOOR BOARDS!!! What does Nissan say? "Yes, it's a known issue" I don't even have to ask what's next, from what I read, head gaskets, and cat problems? Possible engine replacement???? PLEASE, add me to any class action filed. I would like to be included in the class action suit as well. My problems started around 92,000 miles. On my 2003 Altima V6 I have had to change all the converters twice already and it seems that they are clogged again. I also have to put a quart of oil every 800-1000 miles. I have very regular oil changes every 2500 miles. I use Mobil 1 oil so its very expensive and still the car bogs down on acceleration especially on a hill. It also pings at around 2200 and 2500 RPM and the dealer and my mechanic cant seem to figure out what the problem is. They have both recmmended that I purchase a new engine. And my floor and around the windshield is rotting. This is insane! cojoe1@hotmail.com

Doesn't sound good. Honestly I would take advantage of the clunker thing Obamas got going on ,or do what I did. I had to replace my old Toyota Corrola that was knocking and burning at least a quart of oil a week. I really couldn't afford to to go to a dealer ship to shop. So I did some research and found this web site that offers government seizure vehicles. I was a bit skeptical at first but it paid off. I ended up getting a 1997 Honda civic ex for under 3 grand with just 65 thousand miles. The car runs like a dream. Here is the link if you want to check it out.
Just copy and paste it into your address bar

Hello MX268,
I had the same problem as you... When the car had 65K I was using 1 quart of oil for every tank of gas... I fought with Nissan, their attitude, 12,000 miles or 12 months was the warranty, it sucks to be you... Anyway, I paid the $4,300.00 for a new engine. That was cheaper then a new car.
Is there a class action suite? If so I want to be in on it...
Thanks in advance, John

I have a 2002 Altima I bought brand new, no I'm having the same problem as everyone else I've replaces several sensors because my car wouldn't start, I was told that I needed a new engine $4600 and a catalystic converter, got the new converter 3 weeks ago, now I'm told that the car is over heating, my car is miss firing, and it's burning oil like you wouldn't believe, I've spent over $3000 in repairs and it's still not running like it should. Couldnn't trade it in under the Cash for Clunkers program because the said it gets 23 miles per gallon. If there is a law suit going on or will be, I want in, I paid to much for the car and bought it brand new to be having these type of problems.

My 2002 Nissan Altima started burning oil aprox. 3 weeks ago. This occurred at just over the 80k mark. Judging from the ever growing posts, this is going to be a nightmare. If there is anything legally that can be done. Please supply the details.
