2002 Nissan Altima oil dropping - at 108000miles - I was told it needed a new engine

I also have a 2002 Nissan Altima (bought & live in NJ) my car has roughly 109,000 miles. The dealership told me that I needed a new engine. The antifreeze that is "going somewhere" (same problem I had) is somehow flowing/running into head gasket also ruining catalytic converter(?), the car has also starting burning excessive oil, in short the engine needs to be replaced. Being an accountant I really don't understand also this "car nonsense" however, the only reason I bought an Altima was because they were suppose to have a good reputation for the long haul.

I think it is very peculiar to read other people have this problem with the same model and year.

e-mail address is nthies@aol.com

Wow you you got a better quote for a new engine, I was told $4,800.

Once again very peculiar, same year and model car with roughly same mileage.

It seems like there obviously is no class action lawsuit, noone will reply with any information.

What's up?  Are we giving up?

Hi,
Just joined the forum, new user. I have an '02, love(d) the car til it started running erratically last week.  took it to the dealer to catch up on recalls, and Today was told I have the catalytic converter problem, and I need a new engine.  But, I only burn about 1-2 overflow tanks of coolant between oil changes, and I don't burn any oil.  The only problem is cylinder 3 misfire. So I don't have all the symptoms, but they tell me my engine needs to be replaced, out of warranty at 90K miles. I called the Nissan 800 number, and the "regional rep" is supposed to call me back tomorrow 2/9/09.
Am I in the same boat as everyone else, or do I NOT actually have the cat problem? I am somewhat unemployed, and don't want to buy an engine right now.  I have a '07 too, so I can park this car for awhile.

I am also having the same problem, nissan altima 2002 2.5. Engine making noise and the dealer told me I have to replace the engine plus the cat is also gone.

I didn't know about the problem, I bought the car and one day later got the problem. I payed 6000 for it. I am still paying for it actually, just tried to buy a reliable car so my wife could go to work with no worries but I guess I just got trouble and now I have no money to get it fixed.

Please keep me posted if there is ANYTHING I can do. I want it too.

Please tell me if anything was started. I am desperate to start a class action lawsuit, but just looking for help and thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of fellow Altima owners who are suffering the consequences of Nissan's HORRIBLE design and lack of accountability.

Nissan will not even look at my precat because the ECU doesn't say there is a problem. So, if the computer says "no" then there is no reason to visually inspect a part... The car does consume 3qts of oil every 400 miles, runs rough, misfires on cylinder 1, and now they say the head gasket is blown, but there is no reason to look at the precat? Taking it into a ASE Certified mechanic to verify the precat's destruction so that Nissan can't blame me for breaking it if I take it apart myself. It has 72k so it still falls under the Federal Emissions Warranty.

Yes, Yes...I have had this problem since 06.  I also I have a 2002 altima and the cat converter, losing oil every 1,000 miles.  Dealership says "new engine" no recall on this.  I am livid about this.  My car is not even 7 years old and I'm at 114,000miles mind you this issue has been going on before I crossed 100,000 miles and it took a full year before anyone could figure out the oil issue. Any new news on this please let me know.

It seems to me that there are far too many of us with the same issue.  I think it would be worth printing off all all 15 pages of consumers and sending this report to Nissan headquarters and the national news papers. What a shame!  Anyone knows who this info would need to reach.  I'm not interested in the dealership folks I want results.

I just hit a deer with my 2002 nissan altima.  It did severe damage to front of car.  Hood, airbags, windshield, etc.  If anyone wants to sell their 2002 altima with bad engine, I have an engine I just had rebuilt and will buy your car for more than the junk yard will give you for it.
Seriously!

Same problem, 2002 Altima 125,000 miles.  New catalytic converter at 124,000 miles and new crank shaft sensor at 124,500.  After both services my car started burning oil, my car was making a knocking/grinding noise and when I checked the level, I couldn't get anything on the dipstick.  I haven't been in touch with my dealer yet, but I think that will be the next step,  not that it will do any good.  If there is any development regarding a class action lawsuit, count me in.  I can be reached at jessibellum727@gmail.com.

Thanks,  Jessica

I am having the exact same problem with my 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5L engine.  I have had an excessive oil leak, have had my sensors replaced two times, have had a catalytic converter replaced, the car has stopped in traffic on me twice and now the dealership tells me I need to replace my engine.  If there is a class action suite, I definitely want in on it.  My email address is j_paulette@msn.com.

I would like to know it anyone has gotten any help from Nissan on this.  Our Altima has less that 100K miles.  And like all of you, the motor has started eating up oil.  The car sounds terrible untill you add oil.  The  dealer said that it needs a new engine.  Supposedly he call Nissan to try and get us help since we religiously maintain the car.  Well, the help was denied.  So I am now trying to go through Nissan Consumer Affairs myself.  Anyone have any suggestions?????  Please

I am very interested in joining you in a class action suit against Nissa USA. I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5S. The car drinks oil and antifreeze like I drink water, the heat only works on acceleration, idles high in park, the car loses power when driving, had to replace the brake lamp, catalytic converter, cam cranks, ect. In the past 3 months it the car wouldn't start unless I mashed the gas while cranking it. Last month it died altogether. I had it towed once again to my mechanic who told me to get rid of it because the repairs were too much. I need a head gasket and a computer for a total of $3000. I have poured more than $2000 into my car in the past 7 months. I am sick of this. I loved my car until last year, now I wish I'd gotten rid of it when the problems started occurring. Fortunately my car is mine, I am no longer making payments on it. I was laid off, so now I am unemployed. I cannot afford to fix the car and no one will finance me to trade the piece of crap in because I don't have a job. Nissan needs to man up and accept that they have made a faulty vehicle and correct the problem.
Please contact me with any information on a suit.
Thanks
