I have a new 2006 Volvo S60, not a demo, not previously driven. When we first turned on the heater this winter, we noticed that a strong smell of dirty ashtray filled the car. This happens everytime we use the heater. We are not smokers nor has anyone who smokes been in the car. Could there have been something left in one of the ventilation shafts in the factory during assembly? We are taking it to the dealer for a look but I'm expecting to hear they "can't find anything." We hate the smell and hate to think we'll be spending the next 5-10 years with this, plus my new car smell is gone.
