1993 Mercury Grand Marguis Won't Start - odd symptoms

This is a strange problem.

My 1993 Grand Marquis has covered just around 60,000 miles. Very good condition and well maintained.

For some time, on cold mornings, I have needed to hold the ignition key in the start position for up to 45 seconds before the starter motor would turn. No problems with starting once it turns.

This was not a big deal, everyone can spare a few seconds now an again.

This week the problem got worse. Turn the key and nothing happens. Even when I hold the key in the start position, nothing happens.

If I disconnect the negative battery lead, wait a few seconds, then re-attach it, the car will start again. However, if I then turn off the engine and try to start again, it will not turn over - I must disconnect the battery lead again.

I have checked the relay and all fuses, and everything seems to be OK.

The only other problem that developed a little while before the start problem was the electric windows fail to function.

Anyone have any idea what may be causing this problem and how I can fix it ?

Thanks

Verify battery is fully charged.
Clean up and tighten cable connections at battery, starter solenoid,
and engine grounding point, this should fix your problem.

Additionally if either of the battery cables are old or shows sign of deteriorating replace them.
