We just have to share our extreme disappointment with Henderson Hyundai [which by the way, we chose because it came recommended on Edmund's.com]. We asked for and were quoted and a Costco price for a Tuscon we were buying and and they slipped in an additional $2995 -- not a Costco, but we didn't realize this until too late. When we called the next day to ask that they correct the mistake, we got the run around from everyone at the dealership for a good week before they finally let us know that they would not fix the problem. Best part is that the dealer "rep" for Costco failed to inform us that we needed a pre-authorization number and unfortunately without that we are screwed.

File a complaint with the BBB. ALthough there are some good delaerships, I think alot of them too are too sneaky with trying to make even more of a profit. It's not right, and I feel with their advertising, they make it just tricky enough that you believe it, but when you get there, you don't qualify. I went to a Mazda dealership I already got a car from, and was told I don't qualify for the loyalty rebate of $2000 b/c I had to have bought a car from them within the last 4 months. That is ridiculous, and who buys a car every four months?

These dealerships like that, should be stopped in my opinion. You don't see an ad for Macy's or Target saying a mattress or vacuum costs says $499, and get there and they say well b/c of this and that it's actually $799. It's not right ya know? File a complaint with the bbb.

I am also a Costco customer and I am disappointed in Henderson Hyundai, to say it mildly.  The deal I got from the salesman and the showroom deal guy was great, but when I got back to the finance guy, the deal was about $1200 higher.  The financing sheet was higher and we could't talk them back to the original deal.  I am sure the finance guy was dealing on the side for his own cut besides what the dealer was telling us.  If you deal with Henderson Hyundai, watch out for finance guys trying to sell you "VTR" which stand for Vehicle Theft Registration.  It is an insurance policy (kind of) that will pay you if someone steals your car.  But, if you have decent insurance to begin with, you probably don't need additional insurance.  If you aren't paying attention, it will appear under the first item "1.  Vehicle selling price".  It is a rip!  Our finance guy was "Kip".  Please watch out.  If you are a Costco customer, Henderson Hyundai is going to try hard to get the discount back.

You definitely need to watch out in the Finance office.  I am currently a finance manager and have seen lots of sneaky things that other Finance managers have done.  There are some very useful products offered in the Finance office, but these should be fully disclosed and never "slammed" into a customers contract.  Read my car buying tip on finance office, be afraid, be very afraid at Insider Car Buying Tips.com for more information.

The "VTR" that you refer to is also called "etch" and is a good product to have as long as you're not getting raked over the coals.  $1200 is crazy for etch.  Don't ever pay more than $199 for it.  Car Dealerships love Etch, because it's very cheap and they can sell it for outrageous amounts of money.

In the mean time...

Take care and beware,
J the Car Guy

It's not right, and I feel with their advertising, they make it just tricky enough that you believe it.

I used to think Henderson Hyundai was a straight arrow bunch but now I know better.  They pull the ole let's make a deal up front and then when you get to the back room where the finance guys lurks this is what happens.  Slick Kip talks fast and quite nice and will even tell you he's from a part of the country you are from.  The idea is to distract you so he can tell you about some things you ought to have.  If you are a Costco customer, you are fair game for some extra treatment by him.  His goal is to slip more purchases by you and not tell you about the cost until it it in front of you on the financing sheet.  The extras will be in the detail in places you would not normally look - like some extra insurance disquised as part of the cost of the car itself.  Then while you are trying to read the finance sheet, he will really talk your ear off and before you know it, you initial all the magic places with the extra costs and viola! you just bought a new car with extras.  I walked out with about $1200 more than I bargained for out front.  Next day I went back and tried to reason with them and the reply was "You signed the paper!  You bought it and sorry, we don't fix problems you didn't catch at the signing"  YOU ARE SCREWED!!  The part that pisses me off a second time is when the finance people get on this web site and tell you that you screwed yourself and tough crap!

I am currently unemployed and seeking a cheap used vehicle under $3000.  I saw a used Saturn for cheap listed at Henderson Hyundai and called--spoke to a Taci or Staci who told me car was available and that they had other cars, one of which was an old Hyundai Accent for $999 they had but said to come in because a lot of others looked at that particular vehicle.  I stressed that I didn't have car and asked again if she was sure vehicle was still available as well as other ones under $3000 (trade-ins)and she said yes.  I got my mom to drive me down at 7:00 at night and a salesperson, Irwin, advised car was previously sold but he had another vehicle at $5000.  I was so upset at having been downright lied to by this girl and the deceptiveness of Henderson Hyundai salespeople.  There were no other customers on lot and with the economy in a severe downturn, I would think even 2-3 thousand would be welcome.    Either way, I think whatever goes around comes around and when you do that to customers, it WILL make a huge difference in this recession how you treat potential customers.

not to be out done...    there was a car dealer here in so cal...     NOT any more.      that did the price increase on the paperwork...

when they were called on it..  they rewrote the original version. .. they handed it to the customer for approval... then took it back...  did a fast switch... handed them the higher priced one from the bottom of the pile for the customer to sign...

it was caught on camera...     the california DMV showed up really quick... took all the files... closed them down fast...  they had done it to thousands of customers...   i would almost bet ... they had only moved up the freeway and across the state border...

i wonder what they do in nevada to businesses who's employees deal from the bottom of the deck..

we know what they do to people who try to cheat in casinos there...  works both ways... hopefully...

i went off and looked a bit for the video of this...   i think kcal9.com did the sting..

there are a bunch of other car dealer rip off videos here..

remember this...

"Caveat emptor."   the translation from Latin is "Let the buyer beware"  seems there were crooks back then also....

Un-freakin' believable!  Dealers do this garbage for a living. A word of caution to everyone...PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO DETAIL!!! Small oversights is how these dealers have been forced to get over on us. I cover alot of this with this FREE course I put together at www.DealerCheckmate.com  Basically you can picture ALL aspects of the deal before the run-around can even go down.  Sorry to hear that happened to you!!!

Same in Arizona, You have to get everything in writting, and if they attempt to change anything..... Document it, walk out the door and call the Attorney General and BBB. You can usually write the complaint for both. Save all paperwork and get ready to reply....With the BBB you will be asked to reply within 7 days and if you do not, they close the case and mark it resolved.

BE SURE TO REPLY. Even if you won't buy from the dealership. The first one that gives up loses. GOODLUCK.
Won't get fooled again in 2010!

We got a worse screwing from Planet Hyundai in Las Vegas.  Finance guy kept trying to sell us 4 worthless warranty stuff and we kept saying no and he slipped it into the purchase agreement and we didn't catch it until later.  They charged us over $3,000 for this stuff: VTR, Tire warranty, windsheild and dent n ding.  And contrary to what the other person said, yes I didn't fully read the paper work before signing, but also yes this guy know exactly what he was doing slipping it into the paper work because I told him a number of times we didn't want it and he put it into the purchase agreement anyway.  I got the same run around from their management and they had the finance guy, Brian, call me.  He said it was part of the deal and since they gave us a good deal up front this is how they recoup at the back.  He offered us a free oil change and car wash to make us feel better.  I've contact Hyundai consumer department with no answer from a real person.  I'm considering a lawyer and/or BBB.

Good discussion. So one thing I learned is to take the written agreement home, unsigned, read it carefully and have a disinterested person read it too. Sign and date it then make a copy. When you take it back to the dealer, exchange the papers for the car keys, and tell the guy what you've done. Probably wouldn't hurt to say you had your lawyer read it, if you did that.

Any other precautions to take?

I got shafted by Henderson Hyundai too. I bought a 2009 new Hyundai and made a great deal out front as part of a Costco deal, went and sat down with the finance guy.  I signed the papers and took my car and went home and read the papers very closely, realized I got charged an extra $1200 and went back to the dealer and got a royal run around and finally was told I had signed the final deal and that was that.

Here is how it happened. The paperwork had the figures from out front so I didn't put my own calculator to the deal and check to see if I came up with the same figures as out front.  I sat down with the finance guy who was a real chatter box and claimed to be from the same state I was.  He kept me busy. At one point he asked me if I wanted gap insurance for about $30 bucks and I said yes.  Then he started talking about our home state.  When I got home the gap insurance was there along with theft insurance for an extra #1200.  The ole ploy worked - keep the customer busy talking and they won't notice the extra dollars in the deal.

I talked about this with other Costco customers who related the same kind of scenario - some of them caught the trick - some didn't.

If you go to Henderson Hyundai as a Costco customer, consider that you have a big tarket painted on your shirt!!!

You can cancel all of those warranties but you will not get a check back from the warranty companies. The refunds will be taken off the balance of the loan and that will reduce your payoff. Hyundai gives you 5yr,60,000 miles on any vehicle from 2004 until now. The only 2 additional coverages I recommend is GAP insurance which shouldn't cost more that $500 and can be purchased separate from the dealer. If you do plan to keep your vehicle beyond 60,000 miles extend your engine, powertrain, and transmission coverage just get the basic coverage that extends it. Get only the factory extended service contract from Hyundai,a generic contract may not be accepted by another dealer.
