Has anyone had an issue with there Wrangler wiendshield. My Jeep windshield has 6000 miles blown on it and the windsield has no nicks yet in it,  but starting @ the bottom right side a little past the middle of the vehicle i have a crack running from the bottom edge of the black area to the middle 3rd vertically.  It happened Today and wondered if there was any other jeep owners that have had the same thing hapen to them.  This is not my first jeep and own another one and have never had this issue with them in the past. concerned that it may be a factory defect in the windield.  Please give me your thoughts or info on this topic. Glass is 99% not covered by warranty due to it nature !! thanks

I just had the same thing happen yesterday to my '06 Rubicon Unlimited with 12000mi on it. The single line crack started at the very base of the windshield, just slightly to the left of center and it branches into four lines going about 1/3 to 1/2 way up. The temperature here in AK is below zero so I'll bet the defect was magnified by the cold weather. I doubt we'll be able to get it covered but I'm going to try. I'll post my results.

I purchased my Rubicon in Dec 2005.  On or around March 05 and 4K miles, my windshield cracked while sitting in front of our house.  The crack is on the passenger side, just to the left of the viewing area.  I took it to the dealership and they proceeded to tell me it was not covered.  I had not had a road/rock hazard, just sitting in front of the house with freezing temperatures.  I evnetually called Jeep Customer Service and complained.  They replaced it.

While parked at the airport over the holidays (DEC 06), a new crack, just like the one in March 06.  The airport parking lot will cover the cost to replace.  YIPPEE !!

In the meantime, a new crack is now running up the center of the window.  I'm not sure if it is related to the other crack, but I am getting ready to call Jeep Customer Service again and tell them there is an obvious issue.  Same crack, same location.

About 3 weeks ago, I watched as a crack started from the bottom, just off center, of my 2006 unlimited wrangler's windshield, and spread to the right over the next several days ...about 10 days ago, I got a new one, this time on the left side, starting at the base and spreading to the left, almost a mirror image of the first one.  I thought it was so odd that I googled it, and here we are....I don't want to replace or even have Jeep pay to replace windshields on a bi yearly basis...I think we have to get their attention on this, there's obviously a problem, I'm sending them a link to this page

I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, purchased in the fall of 2005.  Just prior to my first inspection (it was in September or October 2006) with less than 10,000 miles I had to replace my windshield.  The crack formed almost dead center at the bottom of the windshield right at the edge of the weather strip and zig-zagged up.

Two and a half weeks ago another crack formed in almost the exact same place in my replacement windshield and has been working its way up and to the right and left.  Based on the responses that I'm seeing here, I would say that it seems like a manufacturing flaw in either the windshields themselves or the frame holding the windshield.

I've also noticed that when I have the defroster on that the windshield gets hot enough that the washer fluid will steam on contact.  I live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and our weather has been very mild this year.

I had the same thing happen to me yesterday, starting just to the passenger side about 2 1/2 inches long.  I am afraid to go look this AM because it keep growing all day long.  It was parked when it happened and was definately not a stone as it was parked in back!

I bought my 2006 Wrangler X in April 2006. Last night there was an ice storm. I went out, turned on my defrosters and didn't even scrape the windshield, just let it melt, and now there's a crack in it to the right of center coming up about 1/3 of the way into the windshield. It was not there when I parked it last night, and it wasn't there when i started it this morning, so it's a bit of an epidemic.

Jeep dealer is replacing under warranty. They took a good look at and there are no impact marks.

Ok, sorry, after the dealer blew me off, I called my insurance co.  they sent out Safelite, the guy looked at it for two seconds and said... Rock.  I looked and you could see the tiny-est chip.  I said, I can't believe I didn't see that.  He said it was so small most people miss them.
So, as much as Jeep has Pi__ed me off with other little issues... this one is probably the fault of the NYS salt trucks.
And I was so looking for a conspiracy... Trust No One.

Looks like I'm not the only one having problems with his jk's windshield! I have mine since 2 months.

A rock hitted the windshield's frame, without hitting the windshield and without cracking it. The same night, a big crack appeared. That night, it was snowing and temperature went under 0.
The dealer was unable to find any trace of impact on the windshield, but they told me that the rock probably hit the frame first, then hit the windshield after. The problem is that the point of impact is 1 inch above the windshield, on an inclined surface (upper frame). The problem with that explanation is that, according to physics laws, it is impossible that the rock, once it had hit the windshield's frame which is inclined, didn't slide toward the inclination which is at the opposite of the windshield.

Anyway, the fact is that the rock didn't hit the windshield. I went to a windshield store (www.durovitres.com) and the guy there told me that a rock on the frame cannot cause the windshield to crack, unless there's a misconception in the windshield or the frame. His hypothesis is that, as there is no more rubber around the windshield to protect the edge (like pre 2006 models), than even the smaller rock will cause the windshield to crack and do not offer protection agains't pressure caused by water or snow freezing between the windshield and the frame causing "stress fractures". The night my windshield cracked, it was snowing  and temperature went under 0...

So, it seems that there's a misconception (the missing rubber around the windshield's edges) on that truck that fragilize the windshield in case of impact (as rocks slide on the windshield once it has hit, until they hit the unprotected edge) and in case of ice between the windshield and the frame. Customers are not responsible for misconceptions causing parts to be fragilized. To put some pressure on daimler chrysler could be great to make them admit the evident misconception on the jk's windshield. Replacing the windshield twice a year is not an option to me.

If you or someone you know had a similar problem (extreme fragility or ice causing the windshield to crack), please send me an email at JKWindshieldIssue@GMail.com with your name, contact information and a résumé of what happened (the circumstances when the windshield cracked).

I have had a similar experience with my 2006 Wrangler although the crack appeared at about 15,000 miles.  The crack starts around the middle of the bottom of the windshield and runs up about 3" then turns right for a total of about 12".  I do not see any evidence of a chip along the crack.

I have talked to Jeep customer service and they determined they could not repair under warranty.  The windshield has a warranty but only for 12,000 miles or 12 months.

2007 Jeep unlimited Sahara. 1000 miles.

I had jeep in parking lot of country club during round and came back to see a 4" crack starting bottom right of windshield. Assuming it was a golf ball, the country club had safelite replace windshield at their expense.

It's now 2 weeks later and we just noticed it's leaking, windshield isn't flush with frame, is slightly slanted and the plastic frame on the inside is now cracked (right under right visor)

I recall admiring the glass installers handywork on how the windshield lined up perfectly after install. Now that it's crooked, popping out and the plastic is cracked I have to assume this is a stress issue.

I'm anticipating the dealer giving us a hard time because original broken windshield is gone and safelite fixed it but I just know if we had windshield installed again it would inevitably get torqued out of place.

Theory: frame is fine out of factory, it's putting the roof on one clamp at a time that torques the windshield frame and knocks things enough out of whack where something has to give.

Hopefully this doesn't turn out to be an expense on our part and is covered under warranty.

Obviously I'll be putting the roof up with both clamps coming down at the same time to avoid something like this in the future. It's only a theory but it's either that or a major defect.

Questions? Comments?

Wow! I'm sorry to hear of your misfortune.

I bought a '07 Jeep unlimited as well. within the first couple of weeks of driving it on the road, a rock from a passing vehicle put a nice little hole in my windshield. these Jeeps have an almost verticle angle on the front glass.

I've not heard of this problem that you are having, but it is something that I would definitely address with Chrysler.

good luck with your SUV. I hope that all ends well for you.

I have a 2006 Rubicon. At 11,000 miles the windshield cracked at center point from the bottom and about 6" up spread towards the passenger side. It currently covers approx. 1/3 of the W/S. The dealer found a small nick (you can barely feel it with your finger nail) that is approx. 1/4" from the top of the crack. I was aware of this small chip but it had been there for some time. The dealer, as of yesterday, said that it was not covered. I believe it is time for all to forward their complaints to the NHSTA (National Highway Safety & Traffic Admin - I believe that is correct) and force Jeep into a recall.

And Detroit continues to wonder why everyone is buying foreign cars?

2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, 8 months old with 5600 miles on it. This is my wife's vehicle and I've noticed a growing number of stone chips in the windshield every time I've cleaned the glass. There must be close to 30 by now of various, but mostly small, pin prick sizes which is odd since this has never been off road. I commented to her last weekend that she seems to have "weak" glass since none of our previous vehicles have had this problem while driving the same roads. In fact, I've never had to replace a windshield in almost 40 years of driving. This week we now have a 6 inch crack that has started from the black glass of the lower passenger side. Yes, there is a small impact chip where it starts but come on, this can't be normal. We even installed the bug deflector when it was new so I can't imagine what the condition would be by now without it. Safelite quote for replacement is $385.95. Has anyone here come up with more info regarding the quality of glass that is being used by Chrysler?
