With no warning, my ignition on my 2001 Jeep Cherokee will not turn. The key goes in and out w/out a problem, but will not turn. Steering wheel position is not the problem. After rigorous tapping on the ignition 'circle', the key eventually turns and starts. The problem is intermittent, but becoming more and more common. Starting the Jeep takes anywhere from a normal 2 seconds to sometimes 10 minutes of jiggling.
Jeep is aware of the problem and says the steering column needs to be opened to clean out the lock device. I think there has to be a simplier solution. Any ideas?

After trying everything, it got to the point when I couldn't turn it anymore. I called a locksmith who said Jeep is notorious for chintzy pin sets on their ignitions.
If this happens to you, the best bet is to get a locksmith who will replace the pin set, as opposed to a Jeep dealer that will replace the entire ignition, charge you big bucks and leave you with 2 keys, one for your door and one for your ignition.

Had same problem. Key would ocassionally work. Finally coughed up $108 for new key cylinder. Twas a snap to fix. It is a known issue with certain jeep models. Did the swap in 10 minutes. Life is good again.
