There's been a lot of buzz about the new Kia Rondo. While I think it's a neat package, and it will sell well, to me, the Mazda 5 still has a sportier edge.
However, I think Mazda should look at this as a salvo across their bow. Here's where I think the Mazda has an edge:
-Rear sliding doors: Believe it or not, there are still people that still like these, even though they carry the unshakable "minivan" stigma.
-Sportier styling: The Rondo is not bad-looking, but I personally prefer the styling of the 5. This is purely subjective, and I'm sure there are people that feel differently.
However, you can't ignore the fact that the Kia does offer an optional V-6, whereas the Mazda only offers one engine. I have repeatedly said that I think Mazda should offer the 2.3L DISI turbo out of the CX-7 as an optional engine. With 244 horsepower, it would give the Mazda a decisive edge over the Kia's 182-horse V-6. Even a turbodiesel 4 like the Euro-spec model would be an interesting option.

My wife and I have been considering these vehicles as we shop around for what is best for our needs. I began a thread on a Mazda forum titled: "Convince me to NOT buy a KIA Rondo!"
You can check out the responses I received here: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123657146

There's no doubt about it, Mazda 5 is better than Kia Rondo in all aspects.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but I just think the Mazda is more stylish and modern, weak engine notwithstanding. Like I said, if Mazda offered a more powerful engine, there would be no contest in my mind.

The Mazda 5 is better in all aspects. I've driven both and the Mazda has much better driving dynamics with a light load. The Mazda looks a lot better too. Where the Mazda comes up short: Slower 0-60 Mazda 5 is over 10 seconds (Rondo V6 8.7 seconds)(Both numbers from Edmunds) No traction control (standard on the Rondo) NHTSA - No crash rating (Rondo is 5 of 5) No armrests for passengers Minivan sliders let in more noise. Captains chairs in second row aren't very comfortable and don't provide a flat loading surface when down. Less leg and head room for both front and second row passengers. (I have no idea about the third row on either as I'm 6'3")
I drove both and liked them both. I bought the Rondo because it is more comfortable, cost less and did everything I wanted it to. Neither one is a sports car.
