Any ideas on a Fail-Safe mode amber warning light coming on? Comes on every 5-10 minutes or so after about 20 minutes driving. comdes on for a few seconds and then -off again!
Nothing seems to be wrong with the car (temperature guage is ok)but it is a little irritating....
Any ideas?

Our vehicle has started 'Fail-safe' after 60,000kms and Jaguar dont care. The problem is attributed to the throttle body assy.($4,500 AUS) and it is intermittent. We went away for a week (1500kms) and it was perfect, came home and went intoF/S 6 times in 10kms. We cant drive anywhere now and cannot purchase a used T/Body. I would buy a new one but am scared what the next costs will be to keep it running. Have also replaced, watertank, many faulty hoses, by-pass tube (the small spigot becomes brittle and snaps off), heater control valve Etc. It could also be due to throttle position sensor.

I would get the codes ran. As far as the throttle body problem; are used throttle bodies that hard to come by? You could probably find a good used one at a local salvage yard. That way you won't feel like you're selling an arm and a leg to get one and maintain it.

Similar problem. I replaced the throttle body assembly so it doesn't go into limp mode anymore. Now my failsafe comes on as an engine fault but the car is driveable although it surges a little. I played with the mass air flowmeter but that doesn't seem to be the issue. The idea of a throttle position sensor is my next try. Any other ideas?

I have 2000 s type jaguar. it was runing fine until 85000 miles all the sudden Fail-Safe Engine light comesup I dont know what to do with that I ask couple people what i can do aboutit nobody no much so i google got answer saying your T/Body get dirty which stop the airflow going to the engine that cost fail-safe engine. To solve this problem just take out your T/Body and cleanit up that will solve your problems. So took my T/Body and cleanup realy good and put the whole thing together since that Fail-safe engine light did not comeback so far.

I have a 2000 s-type and i have the same failsafe engine problem. I'm telling you, so far the Jaguar is a junk car. I had to change the tranny at 67,000 miles. My electrical harness system that powers the entire car went at 100,000 miles. They said water was leaking in the trunk where the power suppy is and it rusted the fuse box. And now this failsafe light stuff; now the car wont drive at all. The Jaguar is a piece of crap car. I hear stories of people with Toyotas that go well beyond 200,000 miles and no issues. This car was a waste of money. I got this car at 22,000 miles used and i took very good care of this car and by the time this car hit 50,000 miles it was downhill from there.

I not being a specific jaguar mechanic.. would mention to you .. that you might want to plug in an OBD2 scan tool into the access port somewhere under the dash board.. usually on the right side on english cars... access the trouble codes..
water in the fuse box in the trunk... i wonder.. if the reason you got the car.. is because it had been in an accident and repaired and resold.. but the repair was done incorrectly.. and water kicked up from the rear wheels got into the trunk or rain water from above.. even water draining in from around the convertible top.. or its drains... yep.. there are drains for that.. where the top is tucked under the rear body panel..
rust can sometimes be washed off electrical connections.. its hard to get it out of relays.. as they are usually damaged...
how long ago did you have the wiring harness changed.??? could be related... could water damage have happened again..
i used to make a decent amount of money resoldering the turn signal relay boxes on the 80s and 90s models.. i fixed them instead of replacing them.. customers were a lot happier.. got rid of the bulb out warning light.. yes it took a few hours.
as for the transmission problems.. you should have googled them.. there is at least one $10 buck spring that fails in the jag transmissions.. a pain to get out.. but you don't have to drop the transmission.. only the pan and the valve body.. still not an easy fix.. and not for the inexperianced.. there is at least one thread on that here...
it could have been a lot of problems with the transmission.. so it might have needed replacing/rebuilding.. hard to tell after the fact..
first place to check is the codes...
oh yea... toyotas will go well over 200K miles.. usually.. sometimes the injectors need cleaning.. timing belts and water pumps changed.. if equipped with timing belts.. thermostats at the same time.. transmissions serviced.. engine oil changed.. oil leaks kept after.. engines compartments kept clean.. but like the water issue in the boot of the jag.. when washing an motor.. it needs to be dried properly.. either air blown to remove water and then a good drive to boil away any residual water hidden..
oh... i think that S type.. had a LOT of ford and jaguar engineers working on it.. it should have a variation of a ford V8 and a conventional ford automatic transmission.. the non jag version of that motor goes well into the 300K miles in police and taxi's across the states.. i take it that the jag version .. would need a ford tow truck to make it that far..
back to the trunk water issue.. did the mechanic fix the water issue??? or did he just replace the damaged wiring??? hoping for another job on that car...????
post if you get this...

I had to get the fusebox and harness system replaced. It cost me over $5000 to do this job. To this day water still gets into the trunk. So here it is this car was always taken to jaguar for service and these high paid techs didn't know for years water was leaking into the trunk. Even though i replaced the rubber around the trunk with them a couple of times. I changed the transmission in 2006 because the car felt like it was tripping. When i changed it, this stopped. That was a $3500 job. And Jags also have a problem where the gear stick gets stuck in nuetral and the car stops accelerating. That happened to me once or twice before as well. i called a mechanic here on long island and he told me he had chage a few gear shifting rods in jaguars. Again i thought it was the transmission but it was the gears. Now the car is in the shop for the failsafe engine problem. Went to Autozone and got the codes and now I have a mechanic working on that. Not a very reliable car. When it works it drives fine. I have to admit.
