we have a 1990 volvo 240. it won't pass smog because of the engine light.
if we unhooked the wire to the engine light would it pass smog? just curious. my husband cannot find why the engine light won't go off.
the brakes are fine. there is also no reason why that warning light stays on either. the front pads were changed and the back ones were checked.
thank you

I doubt that it would pass the smog test if you undid the engine light since the engine light is giving you a reading of the exhaust ingredients. Something is at a high level.  There are auto repair shops that will check your car free if the engine light is on to get a diagnosis.  Could be something simple and inexpensive. Maybe not.  I dont knwo where you are.  Check if you have a Meineike Auto repair shop in your area. I believe they along with Aamoco will check the car for no charge.  Other shops may too.  Get on the phone.

Something is not right with the brakes. Have a pro look at them. Dont take a chance. Its not worth it

Take the car to a shop...they can tell you what is wrong...turning out the light does nto do anything for the tail pipe emmisions...as for the red brake light...it is on for a reason get it checked may be somthing seriouse

It could just be that the warning lights need resetting.

The Autel Maxiscan MS609 is ideal for reading and resetting engine warning lights.

If it is an ongoing problem, though, I'd go to a garage if you cannot fix it yourself.

Hope this helps! Smile

Well,
Following are some og the solution for your problem. Try them out,
- Make sure the parking brake is fully released
- Make sure that brake fluid is topped off.
- Try to remove all brake fluid and refill it again.
- Disconnect the electrical connection at the coolant bottle and reconnect.

Usually brake light turn on due to following reasons and we should take steps to fix this up. first of all check the brake pedal is fully released and then check also hand brake is released or not and then inspect that any leakage of brake oil these are the main issues otherwise you have to bring vehicle to garage to identify the issue.
