please people, save your hard earned money. i have never posted here, but everyone seems knowledgable. my car has over 230,000 miles on it, and i have never used synthetic oil in the engine. i do change it every 3k miles with a filter. it passes emissions every time no problem. now looking back, with the big oil companies reaping record profits, i'm glad i didn't give them one cent more than i had to. keep in mind, my car is a 4 cylinder, no turbo or anything else, just stock. that synthetic oil has to be the greatest marketing act i've ever seen. they also say you can run synthetic longer. i don't want that stuff in my crankcase any longer than 3 months. the by products of combustion need to be cleared out. no, i am not an oil rep. i don't give a hoot what any of you run in your motors, i'm just trying to convey a time tested habit. i use the absolutecheapest oil i can get with the cheapest filter. i run 10w-40, works like a dream. those thin viscosities "save" you gas, but when they start to cool down, they run off the parts to the pan quicker. guess what happens at start up? you guessed it , WEAR CITY BABY. i hate to see anyone pay for a sham in this day when every penny counts. i know others swear by the syn, but for me, i don't think the stuff is worth that much money. i know, i know, but the tests have proven...what they have really proven is that people are so gullible to fall for a "better" oil. by the way, my car has been driven in the city and highway all those miles, probably a 50/50 mix. save your money, don't fall for the hype, your dad was right. stay on a regular schedule, use the appropriate grade, and don't forget the filter. sorry exxon, but you dont make the stuff i use, and it works just fine.

Blueford, you have to learn not to bottle up your emotions...let it out. I don't use synthetic, it costs to much and it tends to find ways to leak. Although I do like the theroy behind it along with the teflons and molly base lubes. It sounds great but believe regular oil and filter changes will do the trick. Oh yeah, just kidding about the bottled up emotions.

Thanks for the testimony on a high mileage car using only regular oil. There is a lot of debate on this board (and I’m sure other boards) about whether to use synthetic or not. For me, I have an 11:1 compression ratio engine running 12 p.s.i of boost which red lines at 9,000 rpms. These conditions create an extreme excess of heat I don’t think ill be running regular oil anytime soon, even if the only true benefit i receive is sleeping better at night.
