I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and yesterday when i was driving i noticed that a little after the transmission shifts into 2nd there is a short ref, about one rpm. it is very annoying cause it causes the car to jerk forward. it doesnt happen in any other gear or specific speed, just after it shifts into 2nd around 2 or 2 1/2 rpms and it doesnt occur every time. first 5 min of driving is smooth. i havent had this problem before and the suv has always been mechanically sound. any suggestions on what it could possibly be???

sounds to me like your tranny is shifting a little hard. have you checked the fluid? it might be low.

Remember, the highest torque change occurs at the shift from 1st to 2nd gears. Low trans fluid will cause slip, not noticed at higher shift levels. How many miles on the trans? A failing torque converter may show the same symptom somewhere around 130-150k. If you have adjusting bands on the trans like the older Jeep automatic transmissions had they may simply need adjustment, that may never have been done, but should be about every 60-70k. If you are mechanically inclined, it can be done by the home mechanic. You will need to drop the trans oil pan and make simple adjustments on the 3 bands. Pretty easy actually, and you can change the filter at the same time. Otherwise, have a trusted trans shop service it. It shouldn't be very expensive to just adjust bands and change fluid and filter.
