Opinions? My brother-in-laws in love with this machine and can't wait until his kids are out of school to buy one.

"New M5 still world's best

BMW's classic sport sedan remains powerful and subtle
Paul Lienert / Special to The Detroit News

ANN ARBOR -- Steve eased the blue Bimmer past the radar cop, keeping the revs low and the speed well under the posted limit. As the M5 sedan rolled stealthily by the unmarked police cruiser, he flashed me a knowing grin from the driver's seat.

The unspoken message: Yes, it's a rush to have 500 horsepower on tap just under your right foot.

But it's an even bigger kick for some folks to have all that juice harnessed in the automotive equivalent of a plain brown wrapper.

Well, OK, an $87,000 plain brown wrapper."

i have only had the privelage to be in an m3, and 330ci and neither of those cars were slouches.  Both performed great and had an excellent interior.  I can only imagine what the m5 is like,

I have driven both the e34 and e39 M5, but unfortunately haven't had, and realisticly don't soon forsee the oppertunity to drive the e60 M5. I have however driven the e60 545s. The previous M5s are just incredible cars. The V8 was an incredible motor, I can't even begin to imagine what the V10 is like to drive, the sound is awesome and with a 7 speed SMG it will be easy to keep in the power band. It has always been one of my favorite things at track days, to see a guy in an M5 passing a viper or vette every session. It is a great blend of performance and comfort.
I don't really care for the e60 cars looks-wise. I think the Chris Bangle argument has been beaten to death so I won't really get into that. The M5 has aways been about understatement, so I guess it acclompishes that. The interior of the 545 is excellent, so adding sportier seats and steering wheel is just that much better.

E60 M5 is almost a perfect car to me. It is a car with performance and luxury combined, even the price is pretty reasonable comparing to more expensive cars that provide inferior performance.

The recent automobile did a car comparison test on the new BMW M5, Audi S6, and the Mercedes Benz E63 AMG (new AMG engine). The BMW M5 placed second place the first time ever in a comparison test mainly because of the jerky 7-speed SMG. The E63 AMG does 0-60 in 4.1 seconds which is faster than the BMW M5's 4.2 (C&D numbers), I wanna try both...

thats my only complaint with bmw (m3 or m5) is the DUMB smg.  its way too jerky unless your banging through the gears.  a regular old stick is way smoother than a smg.  not worth it.  plus when your trying to start out in first and you press the gas, it sounds like you suck at driving stick, riding the clutch, revving the motor.  bad idea if you ask me.

I was never impressed with the SMG in the M3, I was told that the M5s SMG was going to be a big improvement since it was designed from the beginning to be an SMG instead of retrofitting servos and actuators to a standard manual box. I think BMW looked at how many M3s are sold with SMG as opposed with the three peddler and decided it wasn't worth the cost, not to mention I'm sure they wouldn't do a seven speed manual.
