Recently I purchased a 2001 Pontiac Aztek, with 58,000 miles.  When driving it appears shift fine, but recently realized it was not shifting into 3rd.  It shifts from 1st to 2nd normally, then does not shift again until 42-mph, which I assume is 4th or O/D.  My daughter took the car to AAMCO and was told transmission was fine, with no codes (they did not test drive though).  At highway speed engine rpm is 2200 and jumps to near 5000 when downshifting on hills (this I assume is due to trans being in overdrive and 2nd gear).  I have changed fluid & filter - dark wine color, no significant metal in pan.  Any suggestions?  Bad 3/4 solenoid, clogged valve body?  

Sounds like you have a problem with the 3rd clutch or 3rd sprag. A solenoid problem is highly unlikely since both solenoid are off in third. A quick check would be to unplug the transmission connector and see if it moves.
