I got in the van one morning after having driven it the previous day, went to start and it would not. It kicked and backfired and sounded like it might start but no go. I figured the distributor cap had carbon tracked or cracked or something as I had experienced this same thing before so I bought a new cap and started to replace it. I looked at the rotor button and started to pull it off at which point I found the distributor shaft will rotate about 300 degrees with a small amount of resistance. I feel this is a bad thing but cannot figure what might have happened. Help!

Sounds like the gear on the distributor stripped out. Not good as you will have pieces of it floating around in the engine.
