Has high miles (214,000), but I only put 400 on it since I bought it last year. Does not like to shift into reverse or what feels like 3rd gear. Going forward it revs to about 3500 almost right away, once I put it in gear and give it gas, then stays around 3500 while going 30-40 mph, but I never feel a shift once I get to that point (never kicks down), so I don't try to go any faster (it used to get up to 70 mph faster than I could believe). When I try to shift into reverse, it often does nothing at all regardless of how may times I try to shift, turn the truck off/on, etc. On the times it does shift into reverse, it does so with a big kind of 'clunk' and then jumps into gear. I have noticed that it takes longer to get to this relatively usable condition when the weather is cold. I put an OBD-II scaner on it and pulled these codes:
P0740 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfuction P0783 3-4 Shift Malfunction P0306 Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected What are the things that I should be looking for? Is this something that I can do myself (with 200k miles, I don't want to spend too much)?

the first two dtcs and that kind of miles...i am sure the trans is mush...a good overhaul will solve these for you...as for the cyl#6 misfire...could be caused by trans..likly not...what is the condition of the secondary ignition compontents

The wires are new, but the plugs need to be replaced, but that's a minor concern relative to the transmission trouble. I just bought this truck a year ago with the intention of putting a plow on it, but I recently lost my job and would like to sell this truck off for food money. If I have to get a rebuild, or put another transmission in it, I'm screwed. I was hoping there was an inexpensive fix for it.
What do yo think the cheapest way to go would be, rebuild or salvag-yard tranny? Any other thoughts beyond those two?
Thanks!

price depends upon issue...on the trans in your truck depending upon which year it is are just expensive...overhaul (as long as it is done by quality technician) is allways best bet...but for that trans they usually run $900-$1100 plus R&R
