Morning, I have a 93 Dodge Colt with a 1.8 and a KM175-5/F4A22-2 auto trans in it. It has decided to shift into neutral instead of 4th gear or appears to shift into neutral. If I turn off the overdrive option it goes through the 1-2 and 2-3 shift fine, and torque loc up takes place in 2nd or 3rd depending on the load. Where do I go first, shift solenoids, end clutch (which looks like I can replace it with trans in the car) or pulse generators. It’s been a while since I rebuilt a trans, first fwd and electric shift for me. Basically I want to spend the least amount of money and time on this; my starving college student daughter needs her car back. I know….. some people want everything. Thanks for any help I get.....AEH45

Check this out first. There has been a service bulletin on this since 1996. GL Ray
A/T - KM175 Shifts 1-2-3-Neutral
DATE: 1996
TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 336
TRANSMISSION: KM175 Series
SUBJECT: Shifts 1-2-3-Neutral
APPLICATION: Chrysler, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Eagle
KM 175 Series
(includes KM 176, 177, F4A21, 22, 23, 33, and W4A32 and 33)
Shifts 1-2-3-Neutral
The KM Series four speed transaxles have an end clutch, which is applied in third and fourth gear. When the end clutch does not apply, the transaxle neutrals on the 3-4 shift. The following procedures should be performed to diagnose the end clutch.
[Step 1] Install a pressure gauge on the end clutch tap (figures 1 and 2).
[Step 2] With the transaxle in third gear, end clutch pressure should be 118-128 psi (87-97 psi for 1985-86 Galant).
[Step 3] If the pressure at the end clutch is low, the problem is usually caused by a leak in the end clutch piston seals, sealing ring or drum seal (figure 3).
[Step 4] If there is no pressure at the end clutch, the problem is usually caused by a stuck end clutch valve or missing valve body to case feed pipe (figure 4).
These cars are horrible about dumping the end clutches. There are several more bulletins about improved clutch kits and seals. They usually kill the small 1" seal in the drum or the large piston seal. You can get all parts you need from a trans. shop for under $50 and it takes about 30 minutes. Yes, it can be done in the car with only the passenger side tire removed. I can give you a link to a complete walk-through if you need. If you need more info. just let me know.
