Am helping a friend with a 1989 Pontiac Trans Am with the turbo boosted carbureted engine. idles fine, runs through first gear fine, but upon shift to second, the engine begins to labor and it seems to lose all power/boost. Suggestions on what may be wrong? All components appear to be okay, tune-up is relatively new, etc. Thanks for your help.

Is this an aftermarket turbo/carb or the factory 3.8 SFI Turbo?

Sorry, I messed up the year/model. This is not a 1989, but rather a 1981 Firebird Trans Am. This is the original equipment carburetor and turbo charger which came on the vehicle, 4.9L engine with turbo. Sorry again for the confusion.

Sounds like a transmission issue. Something isn't allowing the engine to rev properly

Okay, thanks. Are you suggesting internal transmission problem, linkage problem, combination of both?

It could be either or a combination of both. I'm not much of a transmission expert so I can't really tell you what it might be more specifically but its definitely a transmission issue
