A/C suddenly stopped cooling (while car as running). Fan runs, compressor appears to run (based on engine response compressor clutch is engaging), belt is fine. Attached low side pressure gauge to low side (according to cover cap, and it is, by far, the more accessible refrigerant schrader valve). Pressure was off the scale of the gauge (over 100 psi).

Any thoughts (expansion valve?)

could be a compressor...sounds like you should not working on a/c.  but since i am sure you will anyway...first step is evac system and see how much refrigerent is in it...next step is charge with proper amount if not low and check both the high and low side pressures at the same time...see what heppens when the compressor cycles on and off....but without knowlege of a/c workings you might be out of luck

Don't worry--I am not working on it--had a system a while back that was slowly losing refrigerant, so until I could get the cause fixed I used a gauged fill line to add make up refrigerant.
