Hello. My vehicle has a 5.8 litre engine with auto transmission. About a week ago, I had a dead battery. I bought a new battery and the vehicle started fine for about a week. A couple of days ago, I stopped for fuel. When I tried to start the engine all I got was the dreaded click. The engine does not turn over. I had the battery checked. They said it was fine. Bought a new starter, Bought a new solenoid. Cables look fine. Still the same problem. Oh yeah, vehicle did the same thing when I tried to jump it.

Might want to check the flywheel for missing teeth. I was also going to say check the alternator, but if it does the sae thing when you tried to jump it and it did the same thing, I dont think it could be that.

I own a 1992 ford f150, the other day it started I got to where I wanted to go, turned it off, when I went to leave the motor would not turn over. I cleaned the terminals, tried to boost it and it still will not turn over.(just that dreaded click..) It has happened 2-3 times before, I just cleaned the terminals and it started .... not this time - tried a new battery - will not turn over could it be the starter - ?????? any help would be appreciated

It could be the starter or solenoid or bad connection at the starter. Check that the negative cable has a clean ground connection at the block. And check that the positive cable connections at the starter are clean and tight.

I've fot a '92 F-150 and for the past couple / three weeks it's done a little 'groaning' when I've tried to start it . . . the battery's about 5 years old so I'm thinking I gotten five good years and one of these days, soon, I need to get a new one . . . I keep putting it off and it keeps groaning every now and then, 'til today, when it groans, big time, after the first three starts, and with the fourth, nothing - I figure it's dead . . . luckily I'm only half a mile from home, so I'm able to walk home, get in my wife's car, get a new battery, and hook it up. I cleaned the terminals / cables and when I turned the key I got inside lights, a radio, and headlights, but when I turned the key, I got nothing . . . not any groaning, or 'trying to start' - nothing. I didn't get that bad starter 'clicking' (that clicking is a bad starter, yes . . . ? a solenoid . . . ?), but could it be the the starter . . . ? I thought it was a textbook case of dead battery, and I put in a new one and I'm good to go, but . . . ?
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated . . .

You didn't say if it is a stick shift or automatic. Turn on you head lights and try to start the engine. Do your lights stay bright or dim way down? If they stay bright then you have an open in your starting system. You also have a relay on the finder that energizes you starter solenoid and either a clutch override switch (Standard trans)or manual lever position switch (MLP) (AUTO Trans). Go to the relay with a test light and unplug the small (Red/light Blue)wire . Now using test light hooked into wire, have someone crank the engine. Does the light light? If it does you have problems with the relay, starter or wiring going to the starter. If it doesn't light then you have problems with the wiring going to the relay, MLP, override switch, etc
