Help... I'm doing some repairs on my son's Diesel 82 Rabbit. The AC compressor housing is cracked in several places and won't hold proper tension to drive the alternator, which incidentally needs replacing. I need to permanently remove the AC compressor and fit a non-AC style alternator. Can anybody tell me what's entailed in this? A new mounting bracket for the alternator? Any help much appreciated.

I did this several years ago on a gas rabbit that I turboed. If I remember correctly, you just need the alternator bracket from a non-A/C car and a shorter belt.

I also had thissame problem with the desel rabits which I have had 3 of. Replacing the A/C bracket with a non-A/C tye one is the best way to go but you lso need a non-A/C alternator whn you replace it as the pulley lengths are differet. So depending on which alternator you get you also nee the type altrnator to match it. The best place to get parts for these old rabits is Parts Place Inc. onthe web or call 1-248-373-2300, I have ordered los of things from these people and they bend over backwards to help you and answer questions, all they deal with is old VW's

After I posted my first reply I noticed Forgot to put the word bracket after alternator in that one sentence, A/C and non-A/C alternators each have their own style brackets and also belts.
