I think my 2003 Kia Rio has a dead starter. For the past couple of months the car has been hard to start, but not consistently. Occasionally, like on my way home from work, stop at the store, and then when I get back in the car it would hesitate - you know that sound where it sounds like it's trying to turn over, but just can't quite do it, then it catches. With a cold engine, it started right up.
Yesterday, finally it wouldn't start. Now all I'm getting is the clicking and whirring sounds. I don't think it's the battery - all the electrical accessories work fine. But before I spend a lot of money, I'd like a little advice. Any help would be appreciated.

I am going to say its probably the starter solenoid. but what exactly do you mean by it was hard to start, like it wa turning over but engine wouldn't fire? That would be a seperate issue. The clicking, whirring and not even turning over would be the solenoid.

I agree probably the solenoid is sticking or on its last leg.

Is it still under warranty? I would be checking battery and cables first. A bad soleniod will not cause a slow start. 70% of all electrical problems are caused by bad connections.

check all your connectivity and might do a load test on the battery....
