congrats on the new car. First you can definitely put 17s on your golf, they are a factory size on the GTI and essentially your Golf and the GTI are the same car. I would go with a 225/45/17. You can even go with 18s if you really want to.
There are a few things you can do to get more power out of your car, but don't expect huge numbers. A nice exhaust will get you about 10hp, an intake will give you maybe 5hp and a chip another couple of hp. There are both turbo and supercharger kits out there for your car, but for the price you would be better off selling the Golf and buying a GTI. Suspension upgrades are really nice on teh golf. The US got a pretty week set-up so a nice set of shocks and springs will go a long way in improving your car. There are several kits available that won't lower the car that much and will actually ride better, while still way outhandling teh stock setup.

thanks for the help. the golf is alright, but i kinda wish i invested a little more money in a gti.......although its certainly not a girl car. i traded the golf and 2,000$ for my dads 2003 jetta 1.8t. its a nice car with 17's and tiptronic. i cant complain about its performance, but i want new rims on it. i want to keep the 17's but is there a good brand that is somewhat cheap yet reliable? xoxo Maari

check out both tirerack.com and edgeracing.com
edge racing has Flik wheels, which aren't the best wheels on the market, but they are fairly light and good looking especially for the price.

Thanks for the advice, I'll deff. look into it. I was thinking about putting those lights beneath the car.......the only reason why is because it would look wicked cool. Other than that I can think of at least 5 reasons why I shouldnt put them on. Theyre illegal to have in my state, but I would only have them on when in park.....and couldnt the lights shatter if the car bottoms out? I'm not a fan of the whole totally pimping out your car thing, .....but I need a second opinion. Thanks xoxo, Maari
