I have an issue going on with my son's truck. he has a Toyota Tacoma extended cab truck. It has the 22R engine in it with 145k miles.

The problem is once the engine gets hot occassionally, not always..when you get really to come back to idle say at a stop sign, it begins to runs rough. It seems like it might shut off but does'nt.

I have checked all of the vacuum hoses, replaced the fuel, air filters. Replaced the spark plugs and wires, replaced the distributer. I did most of this because it was due a tune-up. I typically do most of my repair work, but this one has me stumped. I cleaned the EGR valve out, checked the exhaust and intake connections, I thought once it might be the sensor in the exhast manifold. But it all checks out.I have replaced the O2 sensor, since it was bad, but the problem still persist.

Anyone have any ideas?

'94 - When you say it gets hot, do you mean up to running temperature or overheating?

'97 - Have you done plugs yet?

My 95' Tacoma has very similar issues.  It started after a repair. Truck would turn over but would not fire. Repair guy said it was a ground wire and replaced the fuel filter and the plugs but not wires at that time (he asked me & I said no because I was short of cash-I know it was stupid.)  About a week later I had problems similar to clogged fuel injectors.  Repair guy put new plug wires on and I can't remember if he did anything else.  Truck ran absolutely terrific EXCEPT for slight dropping of rpms when idling at stop (but only if the engine was warm).  I thought it was because it was an older truck.  It progressively got worse until one morning it started shutting off driving down the road.  It took 20 minutes or so to get it restarted and had to keep it in 3rd gear to get it home.   Took it back to repair guy for 6 weeks.  He gave up & sent it to someone else with better equipment and he has had it for six weeks.  The only thing I know that was replaced was a coil pack (had a hole in it) and 2nd guy said it ran better without the mass air flow sensor so I found one at a salvage yard. I asked if it could be the computer but the secretary said he normally checks that.  I can't get him to return my calls. Oh, and you would think the check engine light would be on but I think it is disabled.  I'm sure hoping someone can advise.
