I have a '98 Dodge Neon and I have a question. Sometimes my instrument cluster or gadge cluster drops like my car is shut off. Even while I am driving down the highway. Some times it is just my speedodmeter. How can I fix this? Please help.

I had the same problem.  Your pluggs on your instrument cluster are loose.  YOu will need to remove the cluster, which is very simple, and some how tighten the pluggs.  I stuck pennies in between the plugs and plug holders and it has worked every since.

If you havn't noticed I'm Vicki's husband and I fixed the problem by removeing the instrument cluster and resoldering the solder joints on the circut board. The problem was a cold solder fracture after doing alot of research I found this to be common problem in a lot of different cars.

How do you remove the instrument cluster and where is the circuit board located.....Im not surprised if would be a fracture as the printed circuit boards are probably cheap and not made well.

stumpsr,

Autozone provides good instructions.  If the link below does not work, you can find it through autozone's website. Repair Info->Vehicle Repair Guides->Chasis Electrical->Instruments and Switches->Instrument Cluster

http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/19/93/b2/0900823d801993b2.jsp

Hope that helps.  I printed off the instructions, and I am going to try and fix my wife's car tonight.  Darn neons...

I had the same problem. What it is is when you take the instrument cluster out, you will notice a wire going in behind your speedometer. This (from factory) was not soldered well on some cars; similar to how some colours had paint peeling problems. Anyway after a while this wire gets worn and the connection starts to break, then your speedometer stops working.

My 97 neon did the same thing. It would randomly work and then not work. I ended up fixing my problem by just buying a parts car down the road and changing the circuit board but you could re solder it too.
