I have 97 GMC Savana with 150,335 miles on it. Reverse is gone. My son said he pulled out on the highway and it "popped" after that reverse was gone. Is this a prob a backyard mechanic can fix ?? Will special tools be needed?? Will I have to remove the tranny ?? Would it be easier to go see my local junkyard and get a used unit?? I'm trading it off as soon as I fix it.

Sounds like you have a broken sunshell. The tranny will have to be removed to be rebuilt. If you have never done a tranny before it would be best to take it to a good tranny shop. A used one may do the same thing or may go forever. Once you get it rebuilt properly you should be good for a long time.
