My Polo ('T'reg) keeps stalling when I stop at traffic lights and roundabouts. The engine just seems to die, although it starts up again without any problem. It does it when my partners drives it too, so it can't just be my driving! Any ideas what could be wrong?

I am going to guess your Polo probably has a 1.3 or 1.6 with motronic? Just about everyone on this site is in the US, sadly we don't get the polo here so no first hand experience with that specific car.
More than likely your idle stabilizer valve, there are a few other things it could be, but that is where I would start.
Other possibilities, fuel pressure or vac leak, but not that likely if you can start it back up and it runs.

Hi RMcCoy Mines was exactly the same W reg with only around 40k miles on the clock. There are a lot of VW owners experiencing the same. Could'nt work out what the problem was but seemed like it was expensive to fix but it was just so frustrating, the engine used to stall everytime the car stops and at idle. Sometimes it was just undriveable. I have managed to sort my car car out now, what it was was the accelerator cable becomes stretched and carb closes fully, the revs drop and cuts out the engine. On most cars there is a screw to adjust the carb to prevent it from fully closing but the VW do not seem to be adjustable. what I recommend is a new cable or just put a stopper on the cable to take up the excess slack, but it may need adjusting every so often
