Hi
I have a 1998 Dodge Neon 2.0 o/c, 79k miles.
All was great until I had a transmission oil leak - I didn't notice until one day my car would hardly move. I had the transmission filter and pan gasket replaced, the leak stopped, and my car ran fine, but the same day the engine light came on, I bought one of those OBDII readers (cheaper than wasting a day and paying $70 to get the code from a shop) - reads PO743(TCC solenoid circuit?). This was a couple weeks ago, I erased it with the code reader, but it came back w/i a few minutes. Also tried the disconnect battery method, also came back. Otherwise, my car runs fine, hasn't leked since, but idle seems a little higher than before the mil came on.
Where is the TCC solenoid, what could be wrong with it, and how might I try fixing it? Thanks in advance

Cindy

P.S. I'm doing all this on my own - layman's terms, please

First off... make sure that they used ATF 4+ and not Dextron II fluid in your transmission.  Dextron II will screw it up beyond belief!

If you have the 4 speed automatic... A604 aka 41TE, there is a solenoid pack on the front top of the transmission.  Just below the nipples where the connection to the radiator is made.  This assembly can be had for about a $100 or so and is held in place by three or four bolts.  All the solenoid valves and sensor switches in the beast.  If you decide to swap out the assembly... clean the area very well so that no forign material accidently drops into the transmission in the process.

Thank you for your reply. Yes it is a 4-speed automatic, and I also noticed that when the mil is on I have no cruise.

Well, I had a certified mechanic check it out and he says the trans is operating fine mechanically, and the solenoid is fine. He said it may be the trans computer. I have an extended warrantee on certain electrical parts (not including diagnosis), so I took it to the dealer to fix it. He said that there is no separate trans computer, and he checked the trans again and told me it was fine and so was the TCC solenoid, but that I would need the trans replaced. This makes no sense to me, because if the trans is fine, I shouldn't have to replace it.

Is there some kind of reset or reprogram for the trans computer(if there is one), or can it be a problem with the engine computer instead? The mechanics are equally baffled, but I'm not ready to buy a new transmission just because they would charge me the same price to pinpoint the real problem. Are there any fuses, or wires I can check myself? Could the problem be the cruise control? There are no other codes set, and when it is cleared, it comes right back on at startup, before I even put it in gear.

are you sure it's a 4spd transmission, the only trans i know for a 2liter neon is 31th (3spd hydraulic, also the reason why there's no separate computer) look at the front side of the trans, the only electrical part of that trans is the TCC solenoid (2-wire). check and clean the connector if ok remove the connector and check the resistance of the solenoid, to determine if it's open or still good. if open resistance then you have to drop the pan and pull the valve body to replace the solenoid (around $30).  or you can leave it disconnected and change later only  your mileage will suffer a bit and the mil will always light up
