I'm having an issue with a car dealer that i bought a 2004 Dodge Neon SRT-4 from 4 months ago. My question is, when a dealership purchases a car, i'm sure they do background checks on the vehicle, i.e. CARFAX. And now for the question, are there other sources that dealerships have to attain information such as title status (salvage/flood/fire/reconstructed) than CARFAX? The issue i'm having is that the dealer, ( i belive ), has broken a law outlined in the NJ Consumer Fraud Act by not informing me of a car accident that the car was involved in, in 2004. I attempted to trade the car in, and was quoted 12,000$-13,400$ on a new car dealers website, but when i went to the dealership, they pulled up a carfax report that showed this accident that i just learned about, and then said they could only give me 10,000$ because the car had been in an accident, and they're required by law to disclose that information to any potential buyers. They were also somehow able to tell me that the car was in a fenderbender and had the front fender or bumper replaced...even though that wasn't stated in the CARFAX report. My problem is that i bought the car 4/4/2006, and mysteriously, the information wasn't posted to CARFAX until 5/3/2006....almost exactly one month after i bought the car from the dealership. And I have the idea that the dealership could have possibly submited this information to CARFAX deliberately AFTER i bought the car, so that i couldn't then turn around and return the car for whatever reason. So unless i can find some way to find out that they should/did have proof of this, then i'm stuck with a car that i pretty much can't resell unless i wanna take a HUGE hit on. i paid 17,000 for it in april, and now tradein is offering me 10,000$ =(
any information would be excellent! -chris

didn't the dealer find it kind of odd that the carfax was posted up a month after you bought the car?

that is very strange that it would show up after you purchased the car, have you tried contacting carfax and seeing if they can explain the delay on the information?

i agree with both of you 100%. I didn't even notice, and i'm not sure that the dealership I went to yesterday noticed it either, until i showed my grandfather and he pointed out that the info wasn't reported until 5/3/06. I actually emailed CARFAX last night and i got a reply today. they said that they couldn't disclose that information, but the person writing me suggested that I check with the local police station. and that it could be a number of stations in that area i'd have to check with. And she also said that i could ask my current insurance company to run a check on the vin, and that many insurance companies share information, so i might could find something there. Thanks again for the replies guys, and i'll see if i can get an update soon. I work for Department of Motorvehicles here in NJ, so i'm gonna see if i can get a title look up done on the original title, because NY titles, when you sign them off require you to check off yes/no where the car has been involved in a motor accident. -chris
