I own a '98 Explorer Sport with around 65,000 miles. When the engine is idle, I notice a faint metal-on-metal thump. This occurs exactly every five seconds, and I can watch the RPM meter drop slightly and hear the engine fade like it's trying to stall and return to normal directly after.
This is most noticable within the first 10-15 minutes the car is running, after I've been driving for awhile the problem seems to go away.
I've had it to the mechanics once, who told me that a bearing in the alternator and the serpentine belt were bad and that replacing them would fix the problem. Obivously it didn't, so does anybody have any idea what I'm looking at here?
Thank you, -Katherine
