I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 30,000 miles on it. At 25,000 miles, the heater went out on the passenger side first then the driver side (dual climate control). Yesterday I was driving to VA and the window would not move then it went half way down then just went all the way down.It is not covered by warranty because it is over 3 years old but less than 36,000 miles I beleive these people are criminal. How can I determine if it is the regulator and not the window motor? It sounds like the window motor is trying to work but the window will not move. You can buy an after market regulator for about 100.00 and it comes with replacement door clips that always break when removing the panel. Every time I have had a problem, the delaer that sold it to me says I should have bought the extended warranty. Why should all this be falling apart on a vehicle with only 30,000 miles? I will NEVER buy an American car again. I have a 2001 Honda prelude with 130,000 miles and I have never had this many problems. I don;t think I had any problem unitl 60,000 miles.I do not consider this to be a maintenance issue and I am so sick of the poor customer service. Please let me know how i can tell if it is the regulator? Thanks Mike York, Pa

...And we thought we were the only ones having problems with out 2004 Jeep GC windows. One window went down last fall. Two more have fallen in the last 2 months. We fixed them using shade-tree mechanics. I thought it was because I was holding the button down too long after they were up. Glad to know it wasn't me, but mad to know that Jeep Chrysler isn't accepting blame. Maybe we ought to send all these blogs to them?

I just had both of my front windows go out. Driver side went out about two weeks ago and passenger side went out today. Will try to use some of the suggestions on this site to fix the problem but I agree that crysler needs to look into this as this is a major problem.

I have a 2001 grand cherokee limited with 81k miles. This is my second (my first was a 97 wrangler) and last jeep ever. At 50K miles, I had my transmission rebuit. By 60K miles my temperature heater doors in the passenger's side stopped working (they wanted $700 to repair), and in the last 3 months both my left side windows regulators have stopped working. The rear window fell and the front window is stuck halfway open. I have children, therefore there are more important things to spend my money on than a POS! As for that certified mechanic on page one: FU! Have some pride in what you do! How can you look at you soon to be ex-customers in the eye or with a straight face. Either you have no concience or no clue! I am a beleiver in using factory parts, but there is obviously a problem here! I can't beleive I traded in a HONDA for this thing. Two of my friends bought 02 JGC limiteds and have had nothing but problems, including regulators. One just traded his in for an Accord.

So everybody has failing window regulators; just went through this myself, bought a used '99 JGCL in '05 in great shape and fortunatly haven't had too many snafus since. 2 days ago had the ol' driver window is down and doesn't come back up for the night (with 24 hrs of rain coming on)- called around and got the typical $300 to $400 price tag for fixing the regulator and refused to be another victim of parts extortion. Thanks to this forum and a couple of Googled "how to" and schematics sites (check out BodyShopZone.com: http://www.bodyshopzone.com/archives/trim/door_panels/Jeep/Grand_Cherokee_2007/remove_front.html this link will show specifically '99-'07 door panel removal) I was able to take apart, replace my regulator, and put the door back together in about 2 hrs. But here's the kicker, o.k. labor rates are what they are at shops and I'm sure those with greesy hands earn it, but the part price was gonna cost $300!!! Thanks to my local Car Quest Auto Parts store I had the replacement in hand the next day for $88.70!!! I'm just sayin'.... So what we've got here is a garunteed failing part the industry is well aware of which affects our auto's useablility beyond inconvienence (besides security and weather, you will fail inspection if your driver side isn't working) and they know they can jack up the cost because of our desapration. I'm juuust sayin.... If your in the Richmond VA area and want to save some $ get in touch w/ me.

i saw this post and thought about the aftermarket window regulators... like the previous post.. he found they are half the OE price... or less.. i was just wondering if anybody had used them and had them fail yet...
i saw them at dormanproducts com site... so they should be available through most parts stores... if you have a part number..

I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty and have replaced window regulators SEVEN times. When my warranty is up, I am offloading this POS and buying a Toyota. This is my third Dodge/CHrysler/Jeep vehicle. My first car, a Dodge Stratus, had severe transmission issues. My second, a Sebring, was about to lose the tranny when I traded for the Liberty. A window regulator issue seems small when compared to a transmission issue, but SEVEN times without any acknowledgement from Jeep that there is a widespread problem? Bad business, and indicative of why the American auto industry is in the crapper.

I know you posted this over 2 years ago. Hopefully you're still part of this forum. I am rebuilding my window reulator on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. What I need to know is how do you put the cable back on the spool with the TENSION required to make it operable?
Thanks for any input

I have a 2004 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. My driver's side window can't be automatically moved up or down anymore. I had the same problem on the passenger side window just two months ago. It cost about 500.00 to fix at the the dealership. I called Daimler-Chrysler letting them know of my displeasure after reading many discontented customer complaints about the same exact problem on here--as far as I can tell since 1999. After talking with someone with an accent (Indian probably) and straining to understand what they were saying, the information I finally deciphered was that I would need to go back to the dealership and get a diagnosis. Which I did right away, got the paperwork and called Daimler once again. Daimler now has to confirm the diagnosis with the service manager who they can't get a hold of. This is an inconvenience to the customer in money and time, which with a little bit of engineering, the simple product could have been made sturdier (the word is quality). Customers should complain when inferior products are made so the company can improve. When the company doesn't listen, then it's time to spend your hard earned money elsewhere. And who cares if they go bottoms up! They didn't care when we had to come up with money to fix what they should have fixed long ago.

My passenger side front window regulator recently went out on my 03 Grand Cherokee. Although I have a lot of miles on the Jeep, I almost always driving alone and rarely use that window, so it can't be wear and tear or excessive slamming of the door that caused it to fail. As already mentioned here, inside the door panel I found a broken piece of plastic that holds the cable in place.
I bought a new one locally for $100, which still seemed outrageous for what it is. Plus, the only thing broken was a plastic part that should be replaceable for less than $5. At any rate, it wasn't a difficult fix, I'd just advise everyone to be careful on prying the door panel off as it appears the push pins are stronger then the panel holders and I had a couple of them break off. I slid an 18 inch 2x4 into the door to hold the window up and that worked out great. It took me about an hour to do the whole job.

Don't waste your money at the dealership. Go NAPA. $112.00 plus tax, better quality than factory part, fits perfect. No running around for bolts or anything. Took me 45 minutes to replace mine, no problems. Go to any Jeep forum for step by step instructions as this is a common problem.

After replacing the front passenger side window regulator of my daughters 2001 Jeep Cherokee, she then had both rear window regulators go out and on my other daughters 2003 Jeep Liberty she had one rear window regulator go out. After I had the first one fixed, I had the other three blocked up until I could decide what I wanted to do. Then I found the following website: http://www.josh-n-lisa.com/2006/08/29/howto-change-a-jeep-power-window-regulator/ .
So I taped the windows up and took the three regulators out. I begin thinking of ways to repair. I went to Home Depot and purchased cotter pins (3/32 x 3/4 inch). For the Jeep Cherokee, I run a cotter pin around the cable and through the hole of the plastic nylon piece that had broke and secured it on the backside. I went ahead and put a cotter pin in the one that was not broke so I would not have to do it again in the future and just to provide a better secure fit, I put some marine epoxy in the holes to fill eliminate the wobble. Put it all back together and BINGO FIXED! Works like a charm.
For the Jeep Liberty, the regulator is completely different. But I used the same technique to repair it. I drilled a small hole “3/32) through the plastic anchor being careful not to pierce the side that slides on the tracking bar. Then I placed the cotter pin around the cable and sunk it between the spring that covers the cable to provide the clearance I needed so the tracking would slide freely and secured it on the back side. ONCE again BINGO FIXED!
Thanks to the referenced website. It got me to thinking and considering ways to repair them rather than replace them. You cannot just get the piece that is broke, you have to purchase the complete unit. It took very little time and effort to repair. Cost: 70 cents for a bag of cotter pins and 5 dollars for the epoxy.
