my passenger side window of my 2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo just *** on me this weekend as well. i dissasembled the entire door to find that a little plastic component that held the top cable of the mechanism broke. not only this, but once it broke it wound itself into the spool and F-ed that up as well. i found regulator assemblies with motors online for about 100 bucks, but this is rediculous that they couldnt spend the extra cent it would have cost to make it metal.

www.directauto.com - they have the regulator assemblies for 100 bucks.

My driver's side went on me about a week ago ('01 Grand Cherokee Limited). I heard a pop while putting the window up and then it would no longer go up. Can I tell if need the whole assembly w/ motor and all or just the regulator - without taking the trim off and taking the door apart? Should I hear the motor running when I push the button?

I have a 2002 Grand Cherokee Laredo, and as all of you, my front passenger side has a window problem, i had gone to the store and rolled down the window, and when i tried to roll it up, it wouldn't budge? since i didnt have the money to pay for anything i just reached down and grabbed the window and pulled it up, it came up without a problem so i'm realizing its not the motor just the regulator, and thanks to the person that posted directions on how to install a regulator yourself.
Oh and one more thing has anyone else had this problem with their jeep, my radiator fan relay crapped out on us, and is in the shop right now being replaced for 300.00 it seems like since we've had our jeep it was perfect, but once one problem happened it seemed like clockwork everything started crapping out, anyways thankz for everyones advice and help

I had the same thing happen to the drivers window.  The dealer wanted over four hundred dollars to fix it.  I bought an aftermarket regulator and motor and replaced it myself.  Since then I have done two others for friends and now can get though it pretty quick.  If anyone is the Chicago area and needs there window fixed I will do it for 200.00 dollars parts and labor included.  You can call me at 630 202-0636 ask for Rob.  We can set up a time and I can fix it while you wait.  I hate to see Chrysler make any more money off their defective part.

Not everyone is able to go out to purchase a new vehicle every 3/36. We have to hold onto what we have and make repairs until the time comes to be
able to purchase another vehicle.

As with everyone else I have replaced two windows($400 a pop)based on "faulty design" as defined by the dealer.  They screw up and we pay.  I contacted Jeep corporate and basically was told to get lost.  They were not going to take care of the issue.  As with other comments on this Board and others Chrysler's customer service is lousy.  No wonder Mercedes effectively dumped them at a loss.

I have a 2002 JGC at 60,500 miles driver side front window regulator failed. Luckily I had the extended warranty and I had to pay the $100 deductible. However, 9,000 miles later the same window failed and it was the regulator. I spoke with a mechanic at the Dealership and he informed me that this is a common occurence with the Jeep's. I contacted the Jeep Service Area Representative and informed of my issue. (1) I wanted my $200 reimburse (2) Requested a recall on the Jeeps for this issue. I was informed that the $200 should come from the warranty insurer and that they don't issue recalls for non-safety issues. I requested to speak to a Supervisor. The phone call was terminated. I called again and spoke to a different representative and received the same explantion. I am in the process of drafting a letter to my attorney to forward to Chryler. I will keep the Blog informed.

If anyone in the Boston area (I'm in Quincy, MA) needs help replacing a regulator or two, I can probably help you.  I just finished replacing a passenger side front on my 2001 Grand Cherokee.  It was easy.  You get the part (I got mine off of ebay for $60)and I'll install it for a case of beer or whatever you want to pay me.  Should take less than an hour.

I am so sick over this whole window thing!  I replaced the front passenger side window, since it went down in the dead of winter and wouldn't go up.  And yesterday while in a parking ramp at the hospital i heard a pop, and waa-la the window is down.  I had to drive 2 hours home with the window down, praying it wouldn't rain on me.
i found a local mechanic who replaced it for me in the winter for $325.  He said the hardest/longest part is taking the door apart.  And waiting for the part to come in.
I sure wish i were near boston and i'd buy ya 3 cases of beer!!!

Sorry to say to all of you who are complaining about spending money on your ride. I'm sure that when you bought your vehicle " Brand New " were offered an extended service agreement/warranty for the Jeep. When you say no because your to cheap to pay for it then you get what you asked for by saying no. The answer should be no to fix it for free. Everything made in this world will eventually quit working or break. There is no time frame in which it will happen, but you can count on it happening. The people that tell you that it is a rip off to buy an extended warranty for your vehicle is not prepared to pay to fix it for you. It's kind of like car insurance, you sure don't want to pay for it but if something were to happen your glad that you have it. INSURE YOUR INVESTMENT DUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!

"To Cheap"... what to cheap to pay for something that should work right in the first place.  I think the problem, buddy, it that manufactures try to build the "POSs" too cheap so that they can sell them sky high and then try and take even more of your money by offering some stupid extended warranty for parts that should last at least 10 years in the first place.

I've had the same problem with my 2001 Grand Cherokee, with 3 of the windows now.  I found a company on Ebay (after replacing the first at the dealership) that you might check out.  I haven't had any trouble with the 2 that I purchased from them for $155.00 each, plus they gave me a $30.00 core refund and they have a 1 year warranty.  These guys seem to know what they are doing.  http://stores.ebay.com/WINDOW-MOTOR-WORLD-INC

I have (2) 2001 jeep Gc  and just had my first window ever go out on me after a combined 350k miles on the 2 jeeps. i looked in the inner part of the door where the motor and actuator are located and found a small white piece of plastic broken off from part of the window lift assembly.. so now the cable just feeds in and out of the unit and doesnt move the window up or down. until i can replace the assembly i simply took one of those kids pool toys( the styrofoam tubes ) cut it to the length needed to keep window completely closed and shoved it in the door while wife held window in its fully raised position.. 2 weeks now and no window slippage at all and best yet its styrofoam so doesnt rattle inside the door and wont scratch or crack the glass. this is first ever window problem i've had with any jeep , most jeeps ive had were problems with overheating at the drop of a hat.... i'm a loyal jeep owner as this makes 4 that i  currently own and drive nothing but jeep anymore.. 1 is in the driveway for snowplowing(1990 grand wagoneer with 321k miles) all told i have over 1 million miles in Jeeps and for go anywhere and steady /reliable workhorses you can't beat them.  from the previous posts i see that many people have problems with the windows and i sympathyze with them as the costs of repairs is always outrageous..maybe all of you should get together thru email or snail mail and file petition with jeep/chrysler about those window problems.. it worked for a group that was having problems with radiator fan relays cutting out and causing overheating. they all got vouchers for repairs at local dealerships from jeep
