EPA rating for this car posted on window when I purchased the car said 19 city and 25 highway. I have averaged 14-15 mpg in city driving and this is driving conservatively. Has anyone else had a fuel mileage problem with the Speed6. I am very disappointed with Mazda and would never have bought the Speed6 if I had know how much fuel this car uses. There are hemis out there getting better mileage than I am with the Speed6. Gas mileage is horrendous.

Forced Induction 4 cylinder engine! When you turbo a motor running 15 pounds, you will not get very good gas mileage. The motor needs a lot of fuel for combustion. Hate to break it to you but you bought a performance car. If fuel efficiency was important to you should have bought something else. Good luck...

How many miles are on the car? I have heard several Mazda drivers complain about mileage in the first 3 to 4 thousand miles. The EPA estimates are generaly also a little optimistic. They don't know exactly what kind of driving you do, what type of fuel you have in your area, what the climate is like etc. If you were really worried about fuel economy I wouldn't have bought a car rated at 19 city to begin with but whatever. You can't compare your car to a Hemi powered car. The Hemi uses displacement on Demand, and has huge gearing so it doesn't rev.
Mileage also comes down to driving style. People who often think they are driving conservatively use the most gas. My girlfrined and I switch off cars quite often. When she drives our Beetle she gets around 21 mpg around town, when I drive it we get around 26. Needless to say, I am generaly a little faster driver, but I conserve motion a lot better than she does.
If you are really concerned, take the car in to make sure everything is operating correctly.

cars generally get better gas mileage as the engine ages, it should get closer to the EPA ratings when it hits the 10k mark.

What a helpful reply! I seriously doubt that Mazda is running at 15lb boost.

I am working with Mazda with respect to this car. I drive the car conservatively. Fuel economy obviously was not my primary concern when buying this car; my point is that it should be close to EPA ratings, not exact but at least within 20%.

fyi the speed6 is running at 15.6psi at it's highest peak
as for the gas mileage...i'm not sure what's going on, maybe changing the oil will help?

I'm with aquabat...let the car break in...you'll need a good 10k on the engine before fuel consumption gets better...trust it will get better.

I just purchased a Speed6 and love it! The turbo doesn't really spool up until about 3k and once it does then you can watch the needle on your gas gauge move. What I found when driving was that if I short shift the car and keep the RPM's below 3K then my milage really improved. I've filled up 3 times using 93 and I'm averaging 22.5 MPG. I do alot of rushhour and city driving, so more stop and go than anything.
