"LPR cameras, which are usually around the size of a can of tomato sauce, can be mounted on police cruisers and powered by cigarette lighters. As the car moves, the camera bounces infrared light off other vehicles' license plates. The camera reads the plates and feeds them to a laptop in real time, where information from an FBI or local database can tell an officer if the car is hot. Some systems can read up to 60 plates per second, and they work at highway speeds and acute angles."

Is that all the tracking device does? If so, I'm not worried.

Sounds good to me, sounds like they would have more success finding stolen cars and getting people without insurance off the road. I am sure several people think it's to Orwellian because cops would then be able to track your movement, but I guess I'm not the conspiracy kind of guy.

If they wanted to track our movements then they wouldn't need the cameras since they can already do it by satellite.

the city i grew up in has these at the mall entrances, and horse track i wonder how effective it really is, heres a thing i found on it...

"the technology is capable of scanning up to 1,500 license plates per hour, compared with only 60 to 80 per hour by individual police officers. The scanned plates are compared to 110,000 to 140,000 plates in a database of stolen vehicles that is updated on a daily basis. The system also searches databases of wanted suspects and vehicles used in felonies. Arcadia is using $100,000 in grants to pay for the system. Arcadia police will use stationary cameras to track the license plates of all vehicles that enter or leave the Santa Anita Park racetrack and Westfield Santa Anita mall."
