The Car Blog seems to think so:

agreed, wagons are excelletn alternatives to SUVs.  SUVs in my opinion are the worst kind of cars you can drive, they're heavy, they have *** gas mileage, have a high pontential to tip over.  if people say they get an SUV for the space, i'd say a minivan has the same or more space than an SUV.  For the most part, most SUVs are like wagons that are higher, heavier, and have worse mileage.

I really think this question varies, and thus is hard to argue, with who you talk to and what they value or are attracted to when purchasing a vehicle.  You could make the case that wagons are actually better than most SUV's at hauling merchandise while still treating their drivers to more car-like rides and better fuel economies.  You could also point to a developing trend by, cautiously, lamenting that wagons are cool again because, among others, Mercedes-Benz and BMW produce them at relatively expensive prices.  However, it is my belief that if a consumer is even slightly reminded of his or her parents' 1996 faux-wood-paned Roadmaster then the likelihood that they will respond overwhelmingly positively even to an E63 AMG is in great question.  So those who respond better to the sight of an SUV will argue that SUV's are larger, and thus more protective of their cargo.  They may also state that it is the SUV that hauls more.  And, perhaps, they'll also counter that wagons really don't differ too much in terms of fuel economy.  Thus, depending on who you ask, I really think that differing viewpoints will more often than not only get to an impasse.  So, perhaps the primary reason to purchase a wagon in the United States, respectively, is to look different on the road whereas the main reason to own an SUV in the United States is to fit in.

couldn't agree more.

SUVs are the scum of the automotive world. Jay Leno said it best, "If all cars were SUVs I wouldn't be a car guy"

ABSOLUTELY!! Wagons are too often overlooked by consumers as being dorky or uncool. Instead, they blindly follow the Joneses and get a Tahoe or Excursion, and become a gas-guzzling menace like every other suburban (no pun intended) trophy wife or stay-at-home mom that just CAN'T be seen in a minivan or wagon. C'mon people, get past your superficial insecurities and get something that you actually NEED instead of having to resort to becoming a freeway bully for no logical reason.

Yeah? How cool is it when a E55 AMG wagon blows past your gas-sucking H2 and becomes nothing more than a spec on the horizon to you? Now THAT'S cool.

Wagons own ... period

Except tooting a wagon is just not as empowering as a suv...seems to be the selling point of the suv.

I like SUV's, they arent sensible, they arent practical, but they do command power and attention. mini vans do an SUV's job better, but look like a piece of crap. the only wagon i could see having instead of an SUv, is a magnum. it is the only cool, head turnging wagon that can come with a revving 6.1l american v8, and still comes with plenty of amenities inside and out, and all at a good price to.

Wagons would be an acceptable alternative if you didn't care what your car looked like. The fact remains that wagons look stupid and driving one sends a clear message that you're a dork, the one exception being the Magnum, which just screams "I hope my wife doesn't know this has a hemi". Mini vans rock, they're a bit easier to park, and they provide you with a slow vehicle to hand down to any of your kids that might be turning 16.
